Hey all:
I have been using Reaper with Emu 0404 USB for recording (simple stuff, 1-2 mics on guitar and vox) and recording goes fine. However, I have noticed that after I record, sometimes when I playback the recording I get no sound. I have found that if I close then reopen Reaper, this is...
I recently recorded a 20+ person group of spiritual singers using a pair of SM81s in NOS, about 8 feet away from the front row and about 8 ft high (ceiling here was 20 ft vaulted). I aimed the mics down (toward the BACK row voices) - this helped balance the front and back rows pretty well. The...
mjbphotos is on the right track, I think.
Unpowered monitors need an amplifier between the monitors and the mixer outputs, where you have them plugged in.
Show us a picture of your amplifier (front and back) and maybe we can help more. These devices amplify a signal, so they have inputs and...
Check this out - Massenburg using what looks like an AEA R84 on violin while recording Dawn Langstroth singing Mother's Child. See a close up on the fiddle break, at about 1:35 into the video.

Pretty sweet violin sound with this mic at the location...
Like I said in my earlier post, I got a useable -24db signal (-18db peaks) in Reaper without hiss, with voice at 3" from the SM58 and using the 0404 USB's preamp. I had the trim pot on the Emu turned up to about 2/3 to 3/4 of its maximum (max = +65 db). At about 3/4 the way up I got hiss, at...
Emu 0404 USB has zero latency direct monitoring.
ASIO drivers seem pretty good. Only problem I have had is sometimes I have to restart Reaper so the Emu will playback sound.
I am running it on an XP machine. FYI, I have heard that the 0404 creates CPU spikes on Vista and Win7 systems. I...
I am no expert, but I have read that for control rooms, an RT60 of 0.2-0.3 sec is reasonable; for live tracking rooms 0.4-0.6 sec is reasonable. You may want to check your RT60 with RoomEQWizard or something to see where you are.
I have not tried it - you could email Shure about the noise question. It does produce a 16-bit digital signal, so you would not need another interface. It does not have phantom power so you could only use it with dynamic mics.
FYI, if you wanted a real interface, I think I would be looking at...
How about this USB interface designed by Shure for their dynamic mics:
Shure X2u XLR To USB Microphone Adapter ($99)
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/598406-REG/Shure_X2U_X2u_XLR_to.html
It just does 16-bit recording but it might be your cheapest option that works.
For that price comparison ($535 vs $788), I would get the 2488neo. It has 24 bit recording compared to 16-bit on the DP-02.
In the US, the DP-02 is about $399 US and the 2488neo is about $699 US.
I think I would start with something like this for your first $400:
- Emu 0404 USB audio interface ($200) - excellent AD-DA converters, good preamps
- used Oktava MK-319 mic ($100) - good for vocals and acoustic gtr
- cable, mic stand ($40)
- Reaper software ($60) - great value for...
Hey Rick - I just realized you were referring to my bottom pic, not the OP's posted image. In the room shown in my bottom pic, the monitors do indeed fire down the long axis toward the back wall you are looking at. I just have the computer screen on the side of the room so I can put the noisy...
I think I would put your mix desk nearest the wall with the door, with your monitors firing down the 14 ft length. Put your monitors about 5 ft apart and 5 ft away from the listening position in an equilateral triangle. Put the listening position about 38% from the right wall for starters...
My NT-1a sounds pretty good on guitar - it would be nice to pair it with an SDC like the NT5 for a great guitar sound. SDCs can capture faster transients, so its always good to have at least one of them on your guitar when you record. Love the low noise on the NT-1a.
Here is a shootout that...
How far away from the mic are you? Try miking at 6" away, with pop filter.
The MXL992 has a pretty wide cardioid pattern (see attached pic), but close miking should still take a good bit of the room sound out, and will add bass and fullness due to proximity effect.
