    Which of the two mics?

Used Oktava MK319 ($100) - darker than the others here, but nice (better yet with mod) Studio Projects B1 ($150) - very smooth, sounds good on male and female vocals AT3035 ($125) if you can find one - nice flat response but nothing magic Your best choice (in lieu of a cheap condenser) might...

    Which of the two mics?

Of those two mic, definitely the Nt-1a . If you can't put the CPU unit in a closet and run the cords under the door, you will have to build an enclosure for it. If you can't do one of these options, then make sure you record with the back of the cardioid mic toward the computer. If it is...

    "Feels just like starting over..."

I use it with XP so I can't be much help there. I know the Emu 0404 USB has Vista drivers. It has no Win7 drivers yet per the Emu site, but I have read other users saying the Vista drivers work on Win7.

What part of the sounds you are getting now need improvement? Bluetube pre might be a weak spot in your chain. Really depends on what you think you are missing in your sound. How are you recording your guitars?

“clean” settings on the Solo 610 preamp

I record a lot of bluegrass and old-time acoustic instruments. With the Solo 610 preamp, I typically set the gain knob to get the sound I want, then get the recording level I need with the level knob. I generally follow the notion that 0-5 gain on the Solo 610 is “clean” and 5-10 gain is...

    "Feels just like starting over..."

I don't know how many channels you need, but for a very high sound-quality audio interface I really like the Emu 0404 USB (2 ch). It has superb converters (best in this price range) and great low noise preamps. Stick with the sm58s until you know what you need to change.

Starting from scratch... any advice please?

You are getting a lot of good advice here. Specifically, if I were you, I would get: Mic: SM57 or used oktava mk319 ($100) Interface: Emu 0404 USB ($200) Software: Reaper ($60) If you have a nice sounding room, get the mk319, otherwise the sm57.

    Anyone own a UA Solo/610

I have a Solo 610 - the stock tubes are great. I get a big sound, bigger than my other preamps (Sytek 4Aii, Grace m101).

    Loud singer microphone etiquette question

The AT2020 SPL is listed at 144db. Shure Sm7b can take over 180db according to Shure. Since the pain threshold is about 140db, I cannot imagine your singer singing loud enough at 3 ft away to clip the mic. These SPLs are listed for recording extremely loud sources like guitar amplifiers or...

    Microphone for acoustic guitar

I usually reach for an SDC for acoustic guitar (faster transient response). These all sound good (and are less than your price range): Shure SM81 Peluso CEMC6 Oktava MK012 Each of these has a characteristic and recognizable "sound", especially the Oktava. I can usually pick it out in a blind...

Soliciting for Stand Alone recorder opinions

I use the Fostex MR16HD ($400) which meets your requirements. It is very easy to use. Creates .wav files you can USB (easily) to your computer. It has reverb and guitar/amp simulators, but no drums or bass onboard. But for the same money, I think today I would get the Zoom R16 for 24-bit...
