I hate to break it to you, but you got ripped off. I believe that the MXL mic's are made in the Peoples Republic of China. The Peoples Republic of China is subject to the General Preferential Tariff (see: http://www.ccra-adrc.gc.ca/customs/general/publications/tariff2003/2003loc-e.pdf). Under...
There is no standard 15% duty. Don't confuse duty with GST. You can't avoid GST. They'll charge you that before you're allowed to pick up your package. Depending on your province, that might be as high as 15% or 16%. Here in Alberta, we have no PST, so it's only 7%. You get stuck with that...
Do you have Mother's Music in Vancouver? They're part of the Gordon Price/Drum Shop chain. RNC's are regular stock for them here in Edmonton. I haven't seen an RNP there yet though.
Use regular post. By the time stuff clears customs and everything, it's almost as fast as UPS. They treat your stuff as good or better than UPS. And they don't try to screw you with bullshit "brokerage fees".
Nope. Pretty much all of the stuff I've bought has been manufactured in the U.S., and under NAFTA there is no duty on most every class of recording equipment. It might be different for guitars. I've also bought camera gear from the U.S. that was manufactured in Japan and paid no duty on that...
Local shops (Long&McQuade, Mother's Music and Avenue Guitars) for most stuff. Online specialty shops (like Mercenary) for some higher end stuff. And online big box retailers for few things (when they have really good deals on things I want).
Not true at all. The only one I've ever found...
We're talking reverb effect here, not a mixing or mastering room. I have yet to hear a digital reverb that sounds anything close to being "acousticly ideal". Have you ever tried using a natural reverb?
I think you'd be really suprised if you listened to some of these things blindly. Check out the 3D Audio mic test CD's some time and (without cheating) try to pick out the tube mics. Or try the 3D Audio mic pre CD and try to pick out the tube pre's. I'm willing to bet your picks would be...
I sometimes use a Sansamp PSA-1 on vocals, not for tracking though. Usually I just mix a little in behind the main vocal track for a bit of bite 'n grunge. It's good on drums too, though you might get accused of trying to sound like Mitchell Froom/Tchad Blake. I'll bet the POD would work just...
Yep. The last 4 bits just get truncated. That's what happens when a digital signal is dithered too, but in that case a little noise is added to alleviate the effects of truncation.
There was that one too, but ozraves posted some VTB-1 and Audiobuddy comparisons on Harmony Central quite a while ago. The VTB-1 seemed to work better with a C1, but the Audiobuddy was the hands-down winner as a bass DI. No contest.
Use real rooms. Setup a little sattelite speaker in your basement, living room, dining room, bathroom, back hall, kitchen, whatever. Then playback your source, mic the room, record the mic'ed signal. Voila - reverb. You can even "tweak" the "settings" by using blankets, moving big soft stuff...
I kind-of look at it as if there are three categories of "affordable" mic pre's - (1) unuseable, (2) good enough for now, and (3) just plain good.
The mic pre in a Soundblaster card would be in the first category. Mackie pre's, Behringer pre's, Audiobuddy, Vtb-1, DMP-3, and probably the...
I've heard comparisons of the VTB-1 and the Audiobuddy as bass DI's and the Audiobuddy actually sounded quite decent - fairly clean and tight, with good balance. The VTB-1 didn't sound nearly as good. I think it was ozraves who originally posted the comparisons. You might want to check with...
