I know this was done in a BBC studio, but does anyone have any idea how it would have been recorded? Could a similar sound be achieved on a cassette portastudio (tascam 488)??

Actually...would I be at a disadvantage with only 2 XLR inputs? I'm thinking that I'm going to need a couple of mics for drums and the bass which I'd be recording simultaneously. Is there a way round this or should I look at getting something else? S:

Ok...I think I'll try the 488 - thanks for the craiglist reference, never knew it existed! this is an exaple of the album that was recorded on an "8 track cassette portastudio": dyou reckon it would have been the 488? or could I at least get that sound from it?

The 688s do look quite impressive...I think they're harder to find though. How do you get by on the 488s without a gain LED thingy...I've seen the red needles on some portastudios, is there any sort of attachment you use, like a pre amp sort of thing? Or is it just trial and error?! :D

Well I haven't exactly set a budget but if I had the above up: CAD CM217 for acoustic £60 SM57 for electric £60 SM58 for vocals £60 (could borrow one) Portastudio £150 So potentially around the £300 mark. My laptop isn't that great so I don't really want to invest in any programs. These are...

Ok so I'm thinking... CAD CM217 for acoustic SM57 for electric SM58 for vocals Bass guitar plugged straight in SM57 placed above drum kit into a Tascam Dp02 or something..does this sound like a decent (budget) set up? I just need some demos really of good quality thanks

This is great and more encouraging than discouraging. The more offputting side however is money (as always!) but I'd rather go DIY in effect as recording studios can become draining on funds if the right sound isn't achieved initially, at least from my experience. you may be familiar with my analogue posts! However, I recently came across this and THIS is the sound I am after! What would need to get it? Say I was starting from scratch with just a guitar ie so what mics, desk, or whatever...by the way it was recorded with one guy on acoustic and vocals...
