Sweet Marguerita (Little Feat-ish) Compression question

    Busy holiday weekend prevented earlier reply - but I have been still listening and revising the mixes. This is where this one currently sits;

"Ups and Downs"- New minimal techno trance track

This has a bit 'o mid-mud in it still. I'd throw it on a meter to see where the inequities of frequencies are bunching and then throw a taming EQ at that region. I can't isolate WHICH instrument is pushing the freq clutter - but when you clear it, you'll hear it.

    Theme For an Unmade Film

Believe it or not - throw Michael Stipe's vocal over the top and you have a decent REM piece going on. The wince factor is high on this one. Watch the top end of things.

    Feedback on New Song/Mix

First impressions (newer mix): - Overly limited to everything sounding mushed together - like mashed peas and carrots - and you cannot exactly taste which instrument is what. - Bass is too loud - by a lot. - Vocal is too far under the music bed - Drums are muffled sounding - All the instruments...

    Falling (vocal rock)

What I've done is taken multi tracking and selectively edit it to appear left/right in section section to add "push" to the arrangement. Most of the time the guitar is stage left, but during highlighted passages, the right comes into play, sweetening the stereo image. All it is, though, is...

    Falling (vocal rock)

Interesting - because a LOT of the cream returned when I eliminated the cut in O11. I'm going to put in on a spectrum meter and see if it is lacking energy down low. Curious all the same - particularly as the comment above yours indicates they don't think the mix is bright enough.

Mary (Put on your Dancing Shoes) - stitching question

In closure - this is where the song landed - as I needed to tweak the middle section still for better bass representation and balance of vocals. Oh - drums needed to recess just a smidge as well. They were just a little pokey. The other two sections I left untouched. They were simple enough and...

    Falling (vocal rock)

NOLA and Jeff - so I go back and check on the overall EQ - which O11 matches up against a popular algorithm and auto-adjusts - and guess where it had taken a 2.5db cut? Yep. EXACTLY where you weren't hearing it. So much for letting the program decide! :D Here is the newly fixed and futzed with...

    Falling (vocal rock)

I went back to the drawing board on it but I got distracted futzing with other details. I WILL be further playing with it based on feedback gathered here. Thanks again!

    Falling (vocal rock)

Awesome and thanks for that experimentation! I LOVE when solutions are suggested. I'll have to check my eq settings on it as well to see if I tried to trim mud out in that region. Thanks guy!!!

I will revisit and listen for that. Thanks for the mention!

    Falling (vocal rock)

As often happens, when this old dog learns new tricks, he goes back and remixes everything with the new knowledge. I have been recently exploring various setting on Ozone 11 and some of my output of late has been, to my ears, some of the best detail I've been able to achieve EVER. Oddly, it is...

Sweet Marguerita (Little Feat-ish) Compression question

On this one, I think I need to revisit the levels. I'm in full agreement with your assessment. I want it to sound less "pressed" and more natural, w/ clarity. It's still a little "shouty".

Mary (Put on your Dancing Shoes) - stitching question

I really should listen more in mono - but I never do. Thanks for the double check!

Mary (Put on your Dancing Shoes) - stitching question

When played solo - which is how I originally wrote it - that's how it happens, the end of one starts the next. When I went to full production on it, though, I wanted each to have its own arrangement. This necessitated texture blending - but therein lies the trick: making it flow from one...

Mary (Put on your Dancing Shoes) - stitching question

My major sticky point in the first transition is whether the starting guitar tone is too different from the opening - as they were recorded differently at different times. Nice to see that you didn't find it a glaring change. The second transition is to a 12 string guitar - again a texture...

Mary (Put on your Dancing Shoes) - stitching question

This is a trilogy piece - which I wrote in one sitting. I recorded each part separately, and then placed each next to the other in a long string. Each is done on its own and then put in place. Do the seams show too clearly between the segments? Anything else strike you? Thanks in advance for...

Sweet Marguerita (Little Feat-ish) Compression question

For those who liked "Brown Haired Ordinary Looking Girl" (posted earlier), this is the same assembly of musicians working together. Some of these guys I've worked with since my teens - back in my college band. It's kind of wicked different what is available to us now that didn't exist in the...

    Professor Wolff

Ha - I just finished a piece where I inserted a political speech by Jennifer Lawrence regarding the corruption of U.S. electoral process via a need for huge dollars. I agree the vocal needs to come up a nudge. Doc Saul (if you remember him from HRP) introduced me to Professor Wolff. He's a...
