Sooner or Later - quick limiting question

That's a consideration. I recently discovered that online sites have hard stops w/ loudness. Facebook, for example, doesn't let anything get over -14 LUFS. So going above that will automatically be adjusted downwards. Spotify has one too - and I think it's the same as FB.

Sooner or Later - quick limiting question

The drums arrived compressed, so medium compression is baked into the tracking. I consequently tend to apply a rather light touch to further processing - although I believe I may have hit these slightly harder due to them getting "active" at various parts of the arrangement and wanting to pop...

Sooner or Later - quick limiting question

There's actually a fair amount of limiting going on in sequence, but I employ a lighter touch - tending to "trim the tops". Each individual track is between -20 to -30 db ... so I'm giving myself a ton of headroom. I used to mix as close to 0db as I could get. I've just recently changed my...

Sooner or Later - quick limiting question

I'm no fan of the brick. :D I like things to sound clear and glued together well, but not like everything is plastered up against the loudness limit.

Sooner or Later - quick limiting question

I'm posthumously revisiting collaborations w/ Stu and I am attempting to keep clarity at the forefront and "the shouting" of limiters down. This is a delicate balance. There is a "shout" to compression - even at low volume - like shouting in a whisper. I'd liked the clarity of the previous...

Summer (w/Stu - new bass from Tjarko)

Thanks bud! I'll investigate. Tjarko's bass just elevated the piece to next level arrangement. The man works musical magic.

    Blame (Tribute to Stu)

I listened, heard where the issue was, and tried to fix it. Better?

Summer (w/Stu - new bass from Tjarko)

This one wrecked me this morning. It's a song about looking back to one's youth. All the background vocals, guitar leads etc ... done by Stu. He nails it. I reached out to Tjarko, who had also worked w/ Stu frequently, and he contributed a bass part to add to the posthumous collaboration...

    Blame (Tribute to Stu)

The drums were "recorded" on a Roland TD-9 kit - so they're midi. I can not only tighten them, I can change the sound if I wish. I can't remember (as I write) whether I supplemented this with bongos and other rhythm percussion tracks. I may have. I know I did w/ one of the versions we tracked...

    Blame (Tribute to Stu)

It came as a bit of a shock. He was only 65 years old. He was multi-talented, and a very smart fellow.

    Blame (Tribute to Stu)

Okay - I'll check to see if somehow in my attempt to align everything, I knocked the bass track out of sync. That's been the trick of the track. Thanks for the extra ears, P!

    Blame (Tribute to Stu)

Most of this (bass/drums/rhythm git) - outside of Stu's parts - were recorded live. Which parts strike you as off-beat? The jangly guitars? The ebow would be hard to define as "on-beat" and the BGVs align w/ the main vocal (to my ears).

    Blame (Tribute to Stu)

Stu Gort, who used to haunt these very pages w/ us years ago, passed on (I recently discovered). For those that knew him, he was an immensely talented fellow who had an exacting personality. It was his precise nature that made him an excellent guitarist - and guitar maker. It was his guitar...

    Pity - new drum track

I just swapped out the original drums - which were recorded w/ midi through a Roland TD9. At issue was the midi had a LOT of false data in it. I think the hi hat pedal was faulty. So I had to rebuild a lot of that part in fixing it to sound relatively natural. But I wanted a more acoustic kit...

Updated master EQ (slightly louder as well)

    Falling (vocal rock)

Jeebus, Jeff - you've got some fine ears there. Originally the AI mastering plug kicked down the bass w/ a -2db scoop at 200hz - and a commensurate +2db pop in the 4 - 6k range. Since a lot of the energy in this piece (elect/acoustic guitar) are in the range, I left that bump in place - while...

Sweet Marguerita (Little Feat-ish) Compression question

Yes, but I tend to not compress too heavy on the drums anywhere along the chain. I do 3-4:1 while tracking ... but set the threshold up at a reasonable level. Then I lightly hit the buss w/ a compressor just further tame the kit, and a very light limiter to "trim the tops". For detail and...

    Falling (vocal rock)

This one DID (as folks surmised correctly) have a bass scoop inserted by the AI algorithm. I backed that out and made other revisions based on comments/extra ears and this is where I am with this mix:
