This is a bit of my Billy Joel/Elton John/Hall and Oates era influences poking through. I'm a piano player since before my own memory.
Again - just anything that strikes you as "off" is what I'm seeking. I know I'm down to "sore thumb tom hits" level of detail - but all comments about something...
This was a decision I questioned myself, bud. Good catch and thanks for the input. I dried up the vocal significantly because I wanted more sonic edges to it. I'll go back w/ your perspective in mind and fool with it a little more. Reverb adds depth of stage - and I made it very dry and up front.
I do admit that I constantly need to fight the urge to make the drums massive - particularly the toms - and keep everything in perspective to the song. :D
I did remix a final (hopefully) version this morning and blended it w/ the video. I'm posting here so helpful contributors can enjoy the fruits of their suggestions in video format.
Thanks (warmly) to all - and Tjarko - incredible next level input from you especially.
If folks wanted to see the guys who put these arrangement together ... this is a video collated from our creative sessions where we worked on the arrangement.
I'm weird about bass. First thing is I've a 200 hz hole in my hearing - the result of having to have drain tubes poked in them in my youth. So I'm sensitive to overdoing it - and because of that - I'm prone to underdoing it.
I like the bass to be heard, but not dominating. In older recordings...
Recorded w/ my band in 2020 during covid, I do not sing on this - even though I wrote it. I remixed it a month ago w/ new tools and walked away to get fresh ears. I returned this morning to tweak the limiting. I was aiming for clarity and detail w/o it sounding like it was sonically shouting...
Most folks here know how much I hate remixing things, but somehow I found the strength to persevere. :D
I truly do treasure the input. I need to sometimes be goaded/pressured into doing the right thing for the mix - and this place helps give me the kick in the pants that gets me over the finish...
Yeah - it's basically down to things like "pokey tom hits" - which I wholeheartedly agree with. I was of similar thinking.
I also agree the snare can come up a smidge. That's a technical term, smidge. :D
I overall like it - but some of the sounds are a bit "too midi". It's mixed well. Nice and even w/ good clarity. It's the sounds themselves that might use some different dialing in to make them sound perhaps a bit more "organic" (less cheap electronic)? I think a richer sounding voicings would...
I'm not huge fan of this genre, but you've done it well. Nice ear candy that keeps the ear engaged. I might bring the snare back just a smidge - but if you like where it is, it's really a matter of taste.
Nice singing on this.
What I'd do is go back and reassess what sounds you want to be more prominent and adjust accordingly. This is already at nitpick level. But the cymbal hits suddenly become a featured sound and it distracts from the central focus. Nothing is off that much, but I might recalculate some sonic...
Since I had to roll my sleeves back up and fix the mix, I decided to completely rethink my approach. I know folks said some of the vocals were forward, but I wound up stripping a bunch of the background bed out so detail could be even more heard.
I also swapped panning and parts to the side to...
