Struggling with Capturing Electric Guitar Tone/Sustain

You didnt day, but for a typical at home room those amps are a bit much. I'd try to borrow a 15W amp, tube, so you can push the output tubes into a sweeter spot.

Problematic Clean Fingerstyle Electric Guitar Tone...

Frankly thats what I would di is record it straight with no emulations on.

    Snare Drum weak after Mastering

Yes your compressor/limit settings sound like a problem. BUT I also suggest this. Bring down all channels but your drums. Set the drums volume to just barely trigger your compressor (master out). I call it tickling the compressor. Then start bringing up the other tracks stopping short of...

    Mixing goal: flattness or colorization?

The idea that you dont mix for the playback medium is a bit of purist snobbery. That was right back in the day when everybody wanted a kick ass stereo to listen on but this is not reallity today. I listen to mixes on my monotors but also in my car and on my phone. But thats not a problem if...

Easy and cheap way to limit volume from analog to audio interface

I use a compressor before my interface. Cheap one too, Alesis, picked it up used for 25 bucks. Works great. Even a cheap one is ok since you arent asking it to do too much. Not like using it to master.

    Vocals problem

Warm is a subjective term. With your gear by comparison to expensive preams, mics, you will only get so far. I speak as one who uses stuff like what you have. I use Cubase also. In your screen shot theres little that is dramatic except the bass roll off. However the bump in your 4 position...

    Brightening Question

As I said in another thread if you dont have a good EQ trying to add brightness may still sound bad. And thats how you will know. The less is more method mentioned here is correct. Or around 5khz to 10khz broadly about 2-3db gain.

    EQ sweep

Use a compressor on the guitars. That will tame some of that. If I need to cut some hi freqs I always cut the lowest bass also as this will bring the presence back because you can turn it up a bit more. But when it comes to mid/upper mid, I use a broader Q. Rarely is a mid freq standout in a...

    ?

There are good and bad reverbs. A bad reverb will never sound good. Same amount of rev on guitar will not sound as good on drums--typically less for drums. I never use the same rev for different instruments. I use different settings for every instrument.

Is there a faster way to level out vocals?

I was recording before we used DAWs and so I have done both. Now everybody is an engineer. Well fine, but at least try to understand your ears matter much more than your eyes.

Are overhead mics just too subjective?

I dont use condensers either. In a small room no reason to. Hell Ive used SM57s no problem. And Ive used XY, not used it, spread out front, from behind....seriously they can all work or not work if you dont get the distance right. But always remember that cymbals will overpower everything.

    Bass DI

I think it has to be your bass and I would look to the output jack.

    Vocal Waveform Q

This is one effect of computer recording, using your eyes too much.

Patch bay for idiots help needed

I use a mixer for that. That way I have xlr and 1/4. All of my instrument channels are already plugged in. I just bring up the channel I'm using.

What is the best order in mixing tracks?

Theres a reason to start with drums beyond taste. Drums work your master compressor/limiter more. Bass is next. So I always get my drums up to bounce the needle. And like others have said, bring bass, vocals. Secondly, these are also usually the most centered tracks. And I like to work for...

    Are busses absolutely nessisary

I do not apply a one size fits all approch. I do each track. I feel every track has to have its own place. And I never apply reverb on a master.

Gain on an AI...how much is enough

You're looking at it wrong. Numbers mean nothing--until the mastering stage but another story. At the AI stage you only want gain before distortion. So if you're AI doesnt have good monitoring you'll have to use your ears. Most gain without peak distortion. After that, once inside your DAW...

    Monitoring with headphones

To me one of the issues you hsve to get used to is the bass response. I use semi-open but I still have to adjust some. But its something you can get used to if you have the knack for it.

    Monitoring with headphones

Good point about how a good mix will still sound good if you move around the room, off axis. Fine for a 1979 party. But I think today its very reasonable to have in mind that most people listen to music privately in their car or on earbuds. While popular music will get played over sound...
