Oddball Covers-Post 'em if you got 'em

I have about 200 covers at my youtube channel Zepfan59. Lots of deep cuts. May not fit the theme here though.

    Bass guitar consistency

Hey spottydog10 was only refering to technique as it might relate to notes being soft or quiet. As for the other, working in a DAW you can copy the track, find the soft notes, and cut everyhting out around them. Then you can work with those notes with vol or eq whatever, separately.

    Sweeping for “problematic frequencies”

I never boost, I do cut sweep. In fact I rarely, if ever, boost any freq, period. And while there was a time I would use steep cut sweeps, I discovered that just because I needed my ears to have a drastic comparison but my ears are better now so My depth/width isnt so dramatic.

    mixing - frequencies and separation

Gotten a little off from the OP. But learning how to eq for mixing is a serious and necessary part of the learning curve. If its new to you though, don't watch videos, or read articles, looking for specifics, try to grasp the bigger picture. Try to understand "why" what they are saying to do...

    Bass guitar consistency

Are you rcording direct? Because its true the playing could be better but its also common with the bass to have notes get lost due to freq cancelling. Then harmonic notes like A and E with bloom. Trying playing the problem notes in a different spot. But if you really want to keep this (?)...

    CubaseAl10 question

You kind of have to realize you have to deal with stuff like that with these light versions. And as for bugs they arent going to spend a lot of time on them--speaking about the OE copies with hardware. In most cases you're getting a pretty damn good engine as it is.

    Dual boot PC Question

I will do that, I love SOS. Most of what I've seen from digging around has been technical, what/how/why stuff. I haven't seen much in the way of negative or cautionary. So that's why I posted. The SSD is like yeah I'd like to do that as dedicated for just recording.

    Dual boot PC Question

Ha yeah good point and believe it or not I actually have a Mac. My wife is a teacher and they all use Mac's at school so the kids are used to it--way more than me! But seriously with 5 of us there are times when both computers are in use. And that's even with laptops, iPads....

    Dual boot PC Question

Is anybody out there running 2 Windows, like 7 and 10 in a dual boot? I am seriously considering this. I have plenty of HD, 2TB. I am running 7 now. I want to install 10. And since somebody will ask why, I'm always, "If it ain't broke don't fix it" kind of guy. My recording platform runs...

    Too many harmony parts

I would say too much if its true harmonies. That can get old. Now doubling on the other hand, if not terribly obvious, and for the right type of song can be done beginning to end. In the mix this can be just to thicken the vox, smooth out rough spots, or for effect.

    Electric Guitar Recording techniques

I would move the mic around. Every speaker has a sweet spot. Both distance and placement between center and edge. A lot of the big sound I think your are refering to comes from the air pushed by the speaker cone, hitting the mic diaphram. Low Bedroom volume will work for making a recordable...

output from mixer to headphone amp

Been said but use the Mains output. Or you might have a Aux Out, Control Room Out....just not the headphone out.

    Collaboration via email

That shouldnt matter. A wave or mp3 should open and play no matter the medium. Sounds more like op is not rendering the file output to wave before sending. And btw plugins have no relevancy to this.

What higher-level mixing techniques are a MUST for professional sounding stuff?

When I worked at a studio the owner never spent time showing me how to mix, because it doesnt exist. We worked on dynamics and eq. Mixing is too personal, and too specific for each song. At mix time we would start with a rough mix and kind of make decisions together. Sometimes he just let me...

    mixing reverb question

To me it depends on the song. Sometimes I want cohesion, sometimes not. But, yes, changing the parameters does help. I think somebody else mentioned changing the predelay, etc, yes I do that. Here's something I've done to separate. One guitar track dry but only panned say at about 60-70...

Adding a mixer to the equipment

Seems like a lot of over thinking here. Your OP was simple. I say yes, get a mixer. It does what you want, mixes or controls multiple sources on their path to the computer. Even if your current path doesn't demand it, its convenient, flexible. Will let you have multiple mics set up for...

using a mic preamp before my audio interface isc it necessary and how do i do it?

Already well answered but I will concur that most any interface will give you enough gain so you dont need a preamp for that. So the only other reason to use one is to improve the tone. So using a cheap preamp is worse than not using one at all.

Stacking compression effects. Valid, or unforgivable crime against recording methods?

There's no problem. But I recommend that each should have its own function in the chain. Like I have comp up front, before interface.only function is to keep bad peaks out of the preamp. Some channels may also just for peak taming. Then comp on master, 2:1. Then limiter after that. So...
