Ever have a guitar you didnt play, because it was too perfect?

I expect you're confusing "perfect" and "supposed to be perfect". If that guitar was perfect FOR YOU, you wouldn't be able to leave it in it's case.

    Life- and Tubes- Is Cruel

In the old Jets the input went to pin 2. I don't know about the re-issue.

    Life- and Tubes- Is Cruel

+1 on the attenuator (power soak). I use a Weber Mini-Mass. A 12DW7 would be exactly what you're looking for. it's a 12AU7 on one side and a 12AX7 on the other. If you're lucky (a 50/50 probability) it'll drop in and you're in business. otherwise you may have to do a minor mod to switch the...

    Getting back my old guitars

Hooking up with an old guitar you used to have is about like hooking up with an old girlfriend. It might be nice to think about, but it usually isn't what you hoped for in reality.

    Microphone for guitar amp recording...

+1 on the SM57. That's a very versatile, excellent instrument mic. You will find many uses for it. I also like the Sennheiser E609. Once you have the mic, prepare to spend some time figuring out the best placement. This is as important as the mic you use. Yes, if you can plug in an XLR...

When Is It Time To Sell? (Guitars and amps. Some PA Gear, too.

I would sell the ones that no longer serve a purpose, but that's just me.

    setting your own intonation

I have a Conn ST11. Great strobe. I used it for years before they started making the little electronic tuners. As an experiment I tried setting an intonation with a $30 Korg tuner (these are even cheaper now) and checking it against the stroboconn. It was right on the money. The experiment...

Cheap alternatives to the thd hot plate?

Google "dummy load" for ways to eliminate the speaker safely. This would not be expensive. Going with an attenuator would allow you to crank your amp at low volume and mic the speaker. There is some tone compromise with this approach but I prefer it. The 100w Mass lite attenuator from Weber...

    setting your own intonation

Make sure everything is in proper adjustment and your strings are fresh before you intonate. You can use the harmonic, the open string, or better yet, both, to set intonation. A good quality guitar tuner can do a fine job on this.

    Set-neck vs bolt-on neck

A properly constructed bolt on neck has mechanical coupling that is almost identical in efficiency to a set neck joint. Any difference in sustain will be overwhelmingly due to other factors. The myth about bolt-on necks and sustain is just that, a myth. Flame away To the OP, like someone else...

Tube Amp or maybe just a new pedal?

The replies you have gotten in this thread have all been good advice. Here's my 2 cents worth. The guitar and amp are for making sound, pedals are for tweaking it. If you like the sound of your rig without pedals but it doesn't do something you need, shop for pedals. If, after spending some...

Who Sells EL84 and 12AX7's CHEAPEST? I'll Buy From Homerecording Forumites, Too.

There's no real advantage to matching the 12AX7s. There can be an advantage to swapping them around to see which one sounds best where especially for the phase inverter. The brands suggested by c7sus are good tubes. especially those JJ el84s. I personally prefer the new Tung-Sol 12AX7s but they...

nice tube amp for hollowbody electric

If it's a Model 12 it has essentially the same circuit as the effects channel on my Gibson.

nice tube amp for hollowbody electric

LI_Slim, I run a Heritage H-555 and a '51 Vega through a '64 Gibson Minuteman amp most of the time. If I need more volume I mic it. I get a sweet warm overdrive that does great for blues, jazz, classic rock, or backing up acoustic players. It's not the strongest 12 watts but it's enough for most...

Why NOT use a roller bridge for non-whammy guitars...???

That's a nice looking bridge. I suppose there is some potential for the moving parts to take some of the energy from the vibrating string and thereby cost you some sustain, but I bet it happens only on paper. That would be the only downside I can think of. If you decide to try it, please...

    18-string guitars

I'm sure you're right about the dates. Everything about that guitar says early '60s vintage. I didn't pay it much attention when I posted. I just went with what the article said. Great story, Thanks.

    Guitar Choice

There is no shortcut to playing a bunch of guitars and getting the one that you like the best. There is no such thing as a "best brand in Sound Quality". Sound quality is subjective, so are your preferences about the way a guitar should feel. Forget about brand names and go play some guitars...
