Greg_L, No offense taken. Got a picture you'd like to submit for a different place to start?

If someone could make a suggestion of a guitar to choose as a starting point for the surf design it would be helpful.

Here's the same guitar drawn in a sort-of Reverend style. When I use the term ears in this context I mean everything that's attached to the sides of the neck blank of a neck-through design. The construction I was envisioning was to bandsaw the shape of the ears from some stock and cut out a...

It's the nature of this committee process that our initial designs have to have a look that says Gibson, or Reverend, or Fender, or whatever. It's the only efficient way to communicate a style to work from. If there seems to be any consensus to move forward with my drawing we can do that. It's...

This design is generic on purpose. I stuck the slotted headstock, the P-90s and the G&L ASAT bridge on because I had already drawn them for other projects. As drawn the scale length is 25.5" with 24 frets. It's just a place to start.

Hey Muttley, Greg_L and I have agreed on a design. BTW: Make sure the wheels are composites. The aluminum alloy ones are too heavy. Greg wants an Elton John sticker on his.

Even worse. Make it a 19 inch scale length and set it up with super slinkys so gergs can play barre chords.

Got me there. I'm a fat motherfu**er. SGs kill my back. Hey Mutt, Can we build a balsa hollowbody and fill the chambers with helium? Make it 3/4 size so gergles can bend strings on it.

Says the g(u)y with fingers so delicate he can't play a guitar with a full scale length.

I was only referring to the body shape. I would probably want to increase the width of the lower bout to 14" or maybe 14.5", Make it chambered or semi-hollow. Some kind of "F" hole would be fun. We could even make it asymetrical if you want. I would prefer to avoid copying an existing design...

I have always had a soft spot for the early '60s les paul special. Maybe I would upsize the body a bit

Cast my vote for 25.5" also. I would prefer not to go with a bolt-on, but I have no preference between neck through or set neck. edit: I forgot to give a reason I play more acoustic guitar than I do electric. I like the extra tension.

The first question I ask myself is what I would use the guitar for. In my thinking everything flows from that. I might choose a different scale length for a deep bodied archtop than I would for a solidbody with humbuckers as I would play the two guitars differently.

If an electric design is ultimately decided upon: I would like to see you add the PRS 25" scale to your list of standard options. I would like a decision on Hollow, Semi-hollow, or solid made before I chose a scale length or neck joint. It would be interesting for you to set a rule that...

I believe there are far more folks on this board with strong opinions about electrics. There are more easy to understand choices on electrics as well. For those reasons I thing an electric designed by committee would be more entertaining. I vote electric

If You Had $1500 To Spend On Your Home Studio, How Would You Distribute The Money?

1: Get your guitar set-up properly and buy a good tuner. This is the most important single item on the list. 2: An amp that's appropriate to the music you play. The amp is as important as (or more important than) the guitar, where good tone is concerned. It doesn't need to be expensive nor loud...

This is very good advice. Even if you never intend to do any of your own work, you will understand what your tech is talking about better.
