    Studio Projects

I have the C1 and had the B3 at the same time; to my ears, the C1 was clearly more detailed and "airy" (in a nice way) than the B3. Actually, for my vocals, the C1 is superior compared with the SM7 (which I have) and my recently-acquired ribbon mike, AEA R84. The T3 is still calling out to me...

Bottom line: VTB-1 is good enough for me.

Chessrock -- that's funny! I love it. You never know... Big Kenny -- I know what you mean. I've got 11 lap steels and love the variety of sound and tone they give me...not to mention the multiple tube/solid state amps I've got that my wife just doesn't quite understand the need for... Back...

Bottom line: VTB-1 is good enough for me.

I've spent many, many hours reading reviews, posts, listening to sound clips, and really listening to my own stuff and just putting on the headphones to hear what's coming through... Not only that, I've been literally stalking websites and ebay ready to make a purchase of a high-brow preamp...

    Would One AKG C451b?

I just got a 451B a few weeks ago. I a/b'd it with an SM81 at GuitarCenter (before I bought it on ebay), and really was surprised at how much clearer the 451 was -- no contest (it could have been a bad SM81, though). I really went in to buy the SM81. BUT, just to compare, I brought in my...

How will I know if my pre isn't strong enough for AEA R84?

I've got the VTB1 and VCQ3. Does the answer lie purely in how much signal is coming into the pre and showing on the LED, or will the extra-added gain through the output make a difference? Since I haven't heard this mic through a really nice pre, I have nothing to compare my recorded sound...

WooHoo... a pair of R84s are on the way...

I ordered one of these on Friday, which is why I'm curious. I've got a VC3Q and a VTB1 -- will either of those be strong/clean enough to get a good sound with either moderate-volume vocals and fiddle?

Harvey: What do you mean they aren't very efficient?

Why does RNP (& others) not have output dial?

I'm looking into new preamps, and what I've got, VC3Q and VTB1, both have input gains and output volumes. Does this mean the RNP's output volume is always at it's highest, and is controlled purely by the input gain? Any pros or cons to either set up?

Any good dual pre's for $500-600?

First: I've got the VCQ3 and the VTB1. I'd like to get a two-in one pre, and something a step up. Is that even possible for this price? It's possible I can go higher, but since this is just a hobby, it's hard to justify it. Also, what would you recommend as an e.q. unit -- and would that...

SM7 for female rhyming and singing??

I've got both the C1 and the SM7. I'm actually recording a woman and have tried both. With her vocals, which are very Gillian Welch-like, the SM7 works with her better. That said, the C1 has been invaluable to me. It's perfect for my vocals and sounds great with my dobro and as a room mike...

    Ethan...

Actually, mshilarious, I think you're right. With all the crap, it deletes any echo/bad sound movement (think of when you walk into an empty apartment, and it's got echo, but when you move your crap in, the echo's gone). I'm wondering if the problem I was having was with the heat. It was...

    Alan Hyatt

Chris, my best to you and your family. I can't imagine life without my wife and hope I go before her... Thanks for the words of wisdom, and I can't agree more -- considering what really does happen in life (outside this forum), this stuff is extremely petty. It's only rock and roll, guys and...

    Ethan...

I've read a lot of your FAQ on soundproofing/acoustic treatment. I have a 10 x 8 room that has sounded good recording acoustic guitar, mandolin, accordion, banjo, some amped guitar, vocals. But now that I'm trying to record fiddle, I'm not getting a good sound at all, using the same MXL603S...

Can a hot studio affect the performance of a mike?

It's been 85 + degrees in our unairconditioned house, and I was wondering if heat can change the way a microphone (particularly a C1 and MXL603S) receives and relays a signal?

Recording Fiddle (search doesn't help me here)

I've digested most of the prior tips here: Record close; record at least 3-6' away; mike the bridge; mike the nut; mike both of them, have one mike 6' away, and one close, etc. My problem might not be solvable, but I hope it is. It's probably my room. It's a very small room -- a square 8 x...

Sing under, directly at, or a little above the mic?

Oh, Big Kenny. There are plenty of classic photos of Dylan and the Beatles, among others, singing with the mic directly in front of their mouth. Honestly, though, since I've only been recording "seriously" for a few years, I never paid that much attention to something like that. However...

Sing under, directly at, or a little above the mic?

Lately it seems I've seen studio shots of the mic about two to four inches above the mouth of a singer... Comments?

    Studio Projects B-3 and C-1

I did have two B3 mics and a C1. I still have the C1 but the sold the B3s. I liked them, but for $50 more, the C1 really is sharper with vocals and sounds fine (but not as good as small condensors, like MXL603) on acoustic instruments.
