He always irritated me, and that tune is no different. Couldn't stand more than 1 minute of it. Yuck!

    Effects of Over-EQing

First, to clear up it doesn't matter whether you're recording/mixing in the digital or analog world. EQ is EQ. Some units (analog, digital hardware, digital software) are designed one way, others some other way. One thing to keep in mind is if you apply EQ to the same track at various points...

    software question

So, are you looking for a DAW/Sequencer or a Notation program? If you're considering Finale, you might also want to try Sibelius. I believe they both have demo versions (Finale does for sure). They also nowdays come bundled with sample players (for example the Kontakt Player) custom built into...

    Exciters?

They don't. BBE is too light for that.

    Exciters?

I prefer to use digital waveshapers as exciters. Even a simple sine waveshaper obliterates anything put through it when cranked up! D: But used in moderation they sound more exciting than exciters.

    24 bit question

The driver has a ton to do with the performance of the card/DAW/system. It is a matter of crappy Windoze drivers VS ASIO.

    DC Offset

I have a habit of checking DC offset on every track. Sometimes for some odd reason, even when completely ITB, some process or processor may misbehave (I've seen this enough times to check for it as a habit). As a side note, I am working on a little tutorial/sound-design article on creative uses...

    24 bit question

Ethan, admittedly I haven't listened to the examples, as the only thing I can listen to is the crappy laptop speakers I am typing this on at the moment. However, going from a personal experience, when I started in this noise, my first "real" soundcard was a Terratec 2 channel "mastering" thing...

What is the best surface for a monitor to sit on?

BTW, thanks for a great article. I had a good laugh. These guys definitely have a great sense of humor!

    Exciters?

Bah! Next time you should follow the exciter with a flanger with feedback cranked up!

What is the best surface for a monitor to sit on?

Mass. Although not sure if the ones sitting on desks are massive enough. Once I get the new house (which has been dragging on for months... ARGH!) and actually build out the studio there, I am gonna build some stands to put them on.

What is the best surface for a monitor to sit on?

Not if they are shielded :D

    Couch over bass traps?

Thanks for the response, John. I'll probably go for open/sprung frame for comfort anyways :) More work, sure, but will be worth it I think.

    24 bit question

The only thing that makes sense to me and why they might've done this is media formats, i.e. CDs = 16bit/44.1kHz, DVDs=24bit/48kHz. The thinking behind this is that they need to dumb it down for the average consumer that just plops whatever in the computer and expects it to play. In short...

    24 bit question

Soundblaster's internal clock always runs at 48kHz, so when you record at 44.1kHz the driver actually performs downsampling on the fly, which sounds like crap. Ditch the blaster and get a real audio interface.

    Couch over bass traps?

So, I am sort of developing some plans in my head for acoustic treatment in the room that will become my "studio" in the new house I'm in the process of purchasing. The room is relatively small (don't have exact measurements yet), so to save space and have some serious bass traping at the same...

    Not in general. Specifically...

Meh, I say, not only you should use MBC, but you should also automate the crossover points in your DAW, creating nice sweeps. Instant win! :spank:
