Soloing: when to use major or minor pentatonic

Sure we can stay on topic - but you have so many more choices with a modal approach than with pentatonics, and they're just as easy to learn and use.

best learning tool for being in a band?

Have to disagree. If you wanted to be painter, wouldn't you want to know what colours were available to you, how they worked (or didn't work) together - or would it make it impossible to be creative with the extra knowledge. If you wanted to be a cook, would it help to know about tarragon...

    Chord melodies?

One of the teachers at the Musician's Institute when I was there was a chord melody specialist. His name is Ron Eschete (that's pronounced Esh Tay). Great performer of standards in the chord melody style, and a great player generally. Go here...

attn strat owners and owners of REALLY nice guitars

There are many different ways to go - but it sounds like you like your Strat. There are many Jezebels out there, but they usually don't add up to their promise. I've got several great guitars, and a couple of great amps. Every now and then I hear about a 'must have' axe or amp, and so I check...

here you go: "Crappiest deal ever" thread

Bought my first 'real' electric guitar at Pete's Guitar in Minneapolis/St. Paul. I had been playing for about 6 months in the mid-70's. It was an early-70s Les Paul Deluxe. I was living in the Bahamas at the time - and when I got it back, having hand-carried it on the plane, I discovered...

settings for reverb from a delay pedal?

Unfortunately, AlfredB is in Chile - so it may not be easy to get a good spring reverb there. :( . . . and yes, the old Fender Reverbs were really good for guitar. They also used teh same unit on the older Boogies.

settings for reverb from a delay pedal?

Generally speaking it can't be done. :( Delay and reverb are two different things. You can approximate reverb with a delay pedal by setting a very low level of repeat volume and slow multiple repeats but it will never sound the same. The only way to get a real reverb sound is to get a real...

    What's YOUR guitar rig like?

Looks like the amp room at Gil Southworth's store in Bethesda! Except he has a whole bunch of tweed, brown, white and blackface Fenders, too. My rig is a combination of: Old Strat, Old 345, Blackface Vibrolux, Blackface Pro, Mesa Mk IV. . . . and an 18 foot cable.

    The right guitar for RnB?

For Soul and R&B I would choose a Telecaster over a Strat every day. Steve Cropper used a Telecaster on all those early soul hits (such as 'Soul Man'). It's just a great sound for that genre.
