    Teach me about Les Pauls

I'm not really familiar with the new (i.e. post 1995-ish) Pauls, but the 50's stuff through 1958 or so had what is referred to as the baseball bat neck - so imagine a baseball bat sliced in half long-ways. As you got into 59, and more so into 1960, the neck got wider and flatter in profile. I...

    Three Killer Guitar Secrets

A really good player who helped me a lot told me: 1. Listen to what you're playing. No really! Over the years I've discovered many players who don't listen to themselves at all - they just wank around. 2. Listen to the other guys in the band. Listen! Hard! 3. Practise with a metronome...

    Teach me about Les Pauls

This looks kinda odd . . . the finsih looks like the 70's re-issues, but the headstock looks like an original.

    Teach me about Les Pauls

Just goes to show you - one man's ceiling is another man's floor. I love these guitars - they are so cool. (and it doesn't hurt that they sound great, too! My 1961 Special through my Blackface Vibrolux Reverb is just fabulous).

    The One That Got Away

I sold a 1956 Les Paul Custom for $950 in 1981. With the money, I bought the parts for a 'super strat' that I used to make a living for the next six years. Don't use the super-strat any more - but I sure would use the Paul. Oh well . . .

    Teach me about Les Pauls

Check out 'Anfontan's' picture above. This is referred to by collectors as the double-cut non-SG Les Paul. It was made into 1961 and came in two styles - jnr with one pick-up and special with two. There were two finishes - the one in the photo - cherry red, and a banana-yellow (sorta). I have...

    First performance...

This is only necessary when there is a significant difference between the temperature where your guitar is kept and the venue. When you get there, take your guitar out of it's case and let it acclimatize itself to the temperature on stage. It will take about half an hour to get to 'room...

    California Strat 1997-1999

I have no knowledge of recent Strats (i.e. anything after about 1982) -but the 60's color 'Fiesta Red' was actually a salmon pink color. If that helps - cool.

    What songs?

Ry Cooder is a great choice - he sorta wrote the book on those soundtracks. Also check out the following movies: 'The Long Riders', 'Alamo Bay', 'The Border', 'Southern Comfort' and 'Crossroads' - all of which he is on or did the whole thing. For acoustic slide work generally, check out Kelly...

Want to learn to play blues guitar …..Online?

Well actually old boy, the Beatles were very much lower class. Lennon was the English equivalent of white trash. Harrison and Starkey were similarly po' folk. McCartney was middle class-ish. And English people can play the blues - it's not a racial thing. (Just ask Peter Green, or that...

    Jazzmaster value - need help

Try: www.gruhn.com www.mandoweb.com www.southworthguitars.com That will give you some idea. The refin cuts the value significantly. Other factors are how good a paint job it is, the overall condition and the other parts originality. How well it plays and sounds for a refin is probably the...

what brand of guitar/bass do you use?

Depends. IF I know what I;m walking into, then I take the Gibson 345 or Fender Strat, depending on what it is. If I don't know what's coming, I'll take the Strat.
