    speaker choice - governer/vintage 30?

Get ElectroVoice 200 watters. Then you don't have to mess with it anymore.

    Do-It_Yourselfer

Yep - kits are cheaper - and while I haven't seen a Carvin kit guitar, the Carvin stuff I have seen (inc the Carvin PA speakers I used to own) and a Carvin gtr amp were all really good. But the original post stated: "I'm thinking of building a guitar . . . I'm pretty handy with wood and...

I have a custom built 'superstrat'. It is the third guitar I had built. I used it to play professionally for several years. It has 2 splittable humbuckers and a middle single coil, and it's set up so one master switch can go between seperate 'Fender Strat' wiring and 'Gibson 335' wiring ( so...

    HORRIBLE Feedback problem

Farview is right on with the potting thing - don't be afraid to do it yourself. My only comment is if the coils of teh Invader have tape around them, remove the tape (carefully) before putting the pickup in the wax. Potting the pickup will solve your problem.

An amp head with a great clean channel?

Gotta agree with the Roland JC-120 and the Twin Reverb. The JC-120 is really LOUD and always squeeeeeekkkkyy clean. If you try to get it to overdrive you can't. My preference would be the Twin - the tubes give the high end a glassy shimmer that the transistors jsut can't match.

    Newer Vintage?

First of all, the disclaimer: Generally speaking . . . Collectors regard Fender and Gibson guitars as 'real vintage' if they are pre late 1965. Leo sold out to CBS in January of '65, so even a post Jan '65 Fender is still okay as they used up the stockpile of parts during the year. It's more...

    more important: guitar or amp?

Guitar first, then amp. No amount of polish in the amp is going to be able to overcome a bad basic sound. So go get yourself the '59 Strat and '59 Bassman and stop worrying about it. ;) foo

    Recording a '59 Bassman

Two SM 57s (if you've got better mics, then cool) One off-centre on the cone of one speaker right against the fabric. The other about 12 feet back pointed straight at the grill cloth.

    Question about sustain

Easy fix - may cost more than you want but may cost you nothing . . . Get a good volume pedal. Get a good digital delay. Put the volume pedal in front of the delay (ie between teh guitar and the delay) then take teh delay to the amp. If you already have these two (in my view) essential...

how the heck do i choose an electric guitar pickup? there's 75 kinds

What kind of car should I buy? Once you've made th choice of whether you need an SUV, two-door boy racer or four-door saloon etc, then it's the brand name. BMW, Mercedes, Lexus etc. all make great versions of all of the above that virtually anybody would be happy with. Make a choice about the...

    Feedback Question

The type of feedback you describe is usually caused by the windings of the pickup not being waxed and vibrating. I would take it to a good repair shop and have them dip it in wax. That should fix the problem. If you don't have a good local place, send it to Lindy Fralin. Do a web search and...

Potentiometer rigged as a signal blender?

I think this is the same set up as the original Broadcaster/Telecaster. It's a double volume pot; the two pots are stacked vertically on the same shaft so as you turn one up the other gets turned down. It's actually pretty cool. How's the Isle of Wight, Neil?

    Mesa Boogie FX loop

You're welcome. btw, I had the wah in between the guitar and the amp input, and I used the power cord to power the wah out by the mic stand, too.

How much did you pay for your most expensive axe?

If you would like to know, I would be happy to help out. Post the serial number and a photo, or exactly what type of Paul it is (Goldtop, Custom etc) and if it is all original and what has been changed if anything. I used to buy and sell vintage guitars in the late 80s and early 90s -...

    Mesa Boogie FX loop

Same stuff that you would use to shield a guitar cavity, but wrap it around the ccables - then put the shrink wrap (you heat it and it shrinks around whatever is inside) and put the power cord on the outside. I never shielded mine and ran th epower cord seperately, but duct taped them together...

    Mesa Boogie FX loop

It looks good, but you can probgably make one yourself for less money. Get two long (how long do you need?) cables and several double male jackplugs. twist them and clip them together. Run some shielding around them both, then put a power chord along the outside and clip that to the others...

    Crate Amps

Key part of your post is 'warmer sound'. . . . and that means Valves. See if you can find a s/h Fender Princeton that hasn't been 'master volumed'
