    Please criticize my Vocals! :)

Hey, he said to criticize his voice. To lancelot, I'll echo that your basic timbre is decent - your vocal instrument certainly has potential. However, there are many singers with decent basic instruments who fail to make good use of them. Like with any instrument how you use it makes all the...

    Impressions regarding this singer?

Audio file with samples from various covers. Curious how she strikes you. The focus is on the performances not the audio tech - they were done under non-fancy circumstances with decidedly non-fancy gear. https://soundcloud.com/brassplyer-1/jjsamples

Good job. Isn't there a fine for posting something creative and uplifting in the Cave?

    GearFest Mixing Contest

Is the deadline the midnite between 5/31/13 and 1/1/13 or the midnite between 1/1/13 and 1/2/13?

Question on eq'ing and otherwise treating a vocal...

How much do any of you do it with eq or other processing and how much just by using a volume envelope? Anyone know of a really good reference to learn to get that just right vocal track that's both smooth and cuts through the mix without harsh peakiness?

Trying to understand Terry West Steady Pro level controller vst plug

I've been looking at this plug trying to work out its functionality - as I understand it's a compressor/leveler. Can anyone explain what the "Divide" buttons do? Thanks

Best cheap headphones for Home Recording Studio?

Shouldn't headphones be part of the evaluation process? I've heard things that sound decent on speakers but phones reveal issues and vice versa. The goal being to make the mix sound decent no matter what you listen to it through.

    MP 3 optimum bit rate?

By definition the "optimum" is the highest bit rate at which you can encode. These when virtually everyone has high speed connections why not just encode it at the max?

    Poll About Cracked Software

I may be just as annoying to software sellers. I buy a version and hang onto it unless I find I have a really compelling reason to buy a newer version. I'm using Cakewalk Home Studio 2 and use Soundforge 8 for doing tweaks on tracks. There are still many things in both apps I've never explored...

How do I properly record acoustic instruments with a large dynamic range?

Are you talking about compression? That will certainly alter the sound, whether it's really in a negative way might be open to debate. There's a huge variance in "acoustic instruments". While an acoustic guitar can have a large dynamic range, it's nowhere near as much as a trumpet or trombone...

I was under the impression I had a decent mix, can I have your opinion?

Wherever you have these stored, the download rate is abysmal, gave up on the one I tried to d/l.

Glossy Alt Pop - Please Review "Saddest Quo"

Nice tune, overall decent basic idea for a mix - however there's a lot of spikes (ouch!) that need to be tamed with eq. If you don't hear them there's either an issue with your monitoring setup or your hearing.

How does this acoustic guitar sound?

To answer the question of how it sounds, it sounds good. It's a nice performance and good recording but no, listening from the player's perspective wouldn't have the kind of stereo field you've got here. But why would you want to capture a player's perspective sound? The guitar sounds best...

    any tips on this mix?

One thing that strikes me is it sounds a bit essy. Maybe crank up the de-essing a bit and/or try different center frequencies?

    Original orchestral music

The problem with simulating brass instruments, particularly trumpet, even with high quality samples is that there are so many variables and nuances in how the notes are attacked, released, transitions between notes, various inflections. If you strike a piano key over and over the same way...

    Original orchestral music

Sounds good. As usual the strings and percussion are more convincing than the brass. I have yet to hear midi brass that really sounds authentic.

    Versatile Condenser Mic

Just for grins here's a quick demo of some stuff I've done with an MXL 990. The male solo vocals, male harmonies and trumpet stuff was all done with a 990, added to other mixes/backing tracks.

    Versatile Condenser Mic

I'll also mention the MXL 990. Has to be one of the best bang/buck mics out there. I imagine you could pull pretty much anything off the MXL pile and be happy. I know the 990 handles horns well. Another good one is a CAD e-100. A couple of different flavors of the 990 on acoustic guitar...

    Impressions of this mix

I've introduced the notion to her of getting some modestly-priced better gear, that as good a singer as she is it's criminal that she's using such an inadequate mic but as talented as she is, she's something of a technophobe. She likes to go with what's familiar/comfy. The mic she was using on...

    Impressions of this mix

This was built up around this girl's recording on a karaoke site. She was singing into a cheap POS "computer" mic which besides having limited fidelity is completely overwhelmed by her huge voice - yes there's definitely distortion on her vocal. The site does have stereo tracks but the way she...
