Do you think there is more for you to learn about songwriting ?

I suppose it could be argued that once a writer has gained a general understanding of song structure - verse, vs. chorus, vs. bridge, etc. and perhaps the basic difference between rhyming the 1st line with the 2nd line (vs. rhyming the 1st and 3rd line), etc. and perhaps the use of internal...

Do you think there is more for you to learn about songwriting ?

Grim, All of your counter points are well stated. Like most of the questions you have posted to stimulate discussion - this is all a matter of perspective and opinion. Someone else mentioned that when it comes to writing the basic templates were establisjed long ago. We all know there are 12...

Do you think there is more for you to learn about songwriting ?

I would suggest that it is arrogant for anyone to claim there is nothing new to learn (about any given subject). Someone who would suggest that simply reveals the depth of their ignorance rather than a wealth of knowledge. Everytime I write a song I learn something (even if it simply...

How many mics would you use?

I agree with Greg on just about everything he said. If you can get the drummer to play a smaller kit for the sake of recording - you will have less headaches. It can be possible to get a good sound with only 4 mics (kick, snare and 2 room mics) - however, if the room does not have a good sound...

When the red light comes on

I suspect that only very experianced session players don't feel at least a little pressure when the red light comes on. As most have said - you are not alone. The best cure is to play the part often enough that you have some confidence - and candidly, I would always have the red light on ...

Is there any song subject matter that you find hard to listen to ?

Hey - leave my mom out of this

Is there any song subject matter that you find hard to listen to ?

I can't say any particular lyrical content "offends" me - some I can't relate to but that in it self would not turn me away - if I enjoyed the music, arrangement or recording quality. Some of the "gansta rap" that promotes beating bitches, killing cops etc. is a little too extreme for me - but...

    200 Tracks?!

I normally use in the range of 24-30 tracks (this normally includes 10-12 audio tracks (guitars, bass. lead and harmony vocals), 8 tracks for drums and normally about 6-8 tracks for MIDI modules) - many of the tracks only come it at a chorus, etc.

Home recording; Freedom, salvation or mere sidetrack ?

I think Seafroggys is correct that home recording will be a relatively important footnote, both as a vehicle that allowed artists more opportuity to write and arrange (paving the way for careers that then led to major studio releases, etc.) and as a movement that gave equipment companies...

How important is subject matter in songs ?

1 beer + 1 beer = 2 beers????? Perhaps my thought process is not deep enough to comprehend the esoteric nature of this argument - but arguing that one plus one does not equal two seems to be such a waste of time and effort. Certainly you folks can hi-jack this or any other thread for your...

    Amen to that!!!!

Have drugs ever enhanced your creativity as a songwriter or player ?

Whatever our individual opinions about the value/risk of drugs and/or alcohol, I'd like to think we can all agree that we've lost some amazingly talented people to drugs/alcohol at much too young an age. I would love to hear what their body of work would have been had they not crashed and...

How important is subject matter in songs ?

dragonworks - I enjoyed your lyrics. I perceive this to be a story of a military man heading off to war, coming back years later with the emotional baggage that most returning warriors carry. The parents have passed away and he and his family will suffer the after affects of his time in battle...

Have drugs ever enhanced your creativity as a songwriter or player ?

Given that I spent close to 3 decades high on pot every day (other than time spent at my day job) - I did compose often while high. In retrospect, it did not enhance or improve my creativity - it was simply a constant state of mind. As Grim points out, if anything it simply compromised the...

Have you ever "practiced" writing songs ?

I suspect I've been one to use the phrase "practise your craft" - and I fully agree that 1) craft my be somewhat of a cliche' and 2) the word practise is misleading. I feel every time I write or start to write I am "practising the craft" just as everytime I play a chord sequence or play a riff...

Did you ever want to be a professional in the music biz ?

Grim - you may have indeed identified a Freudiian slip - while playing drums gave me some of the most enjoyable moments of my life - they always seemed to be somewhere in the picture at the lowest points as well ........ or maybe ................... it's just a typo ...................... I will...

How important is subject matter in songs ?

Obviously, this is subjective. I personally, enjoy a song with well writen lyrics which tell a "story". I beleive many if not most songs that have been successful at a commerical level had lyrics that a large cross section of listeners could relate to (lost love, broken hearts, partying on the...

Did you ever want to be a professional in the music biz ?

When I started to play drums back in the 60s - there was no doubt in my mind that I was going to be a "professional" (although at that time, I think the process was more along the lines of - that was all I wanted to do - so I had to make a living doing it - vs. a specific goal to be...

How long have you been singing or playing and do you still practice ?

I've been playing drumspercussion for about 45 years (55 if you don't count paying gigs), guitar/bass for about 40 years, keys about 30 years and other various instruments (banjo, pedal steel, etc.) for anywhere from 10-15 years. I don't pratice drums much (that is my main axe and I get enough...
