    It all depends on what your girlfriend does. If, lets say she plays guitar and sings, then my recommendation for an entry level is to by the m-audio fast track pro which comes with AVID Live lite 8.2 DAW and also you must buy a mic such as the Shure SM58 which I love.

    My recommendation is to buy a shure SM58 mic plus a M-Audio fast track pro or the M-Audio fast track if you just need to record your voice. Both comes with Ableton Live Lite which is a good entry level DAW software to record and edit your songs.

    I would go for the audio interface; there are lots of brands like saffire 6 USB, the M-Audio fast track or the Tascam 122 MKII. That way you keep the SM58 which is a fantastic microphone.
