    The Basic Basics of MIDI

Ah, that's well beyond where I'm at right now... That about where I am now. I want to get the hang of the terminology so that I have a clue as to what all the control codes do. I'm actually not using Ableton. I've been a loyal Acid user since 2002. Acid comes with a default DLS soft synth...

    The Basic Basics of MIDI

The drums-on-channel-10 thing actually seems kind of fitting, but still arbitrary. I think because the '1' and the '0' remind me of a drum stick and snare... But then I can also be odd...

    The Basic Basics of MIDI

Definitely clearer... Thanks... So, is that to say that any MIDI-standard-abiding syth out there will have these default instruments in a default bank? And that what makes synths different are the additional banks of their own instruments?

    The Basic Basics of MIDI

I like what I read so far. I'll try to read more when I have time. (I'm at work right now...)

    The Basic Basics of MIDI

I actually checked out Tweak's page before I made my post. I liked it, but it still wasn't quite broken down to a level that I grasped (which is not to imply that it's the article's fault :p)

    The Basic Basics of MIDI

Thank you for that. That was helpful, but I still feel uncertain about some things. From what I get from the article, it sounds like "program" means the same thing as "patch", so a program change really means a patch change. And it sounds like "banks" contain "patches". Is that right?

    The Basic Basics of MIDI

So, I'm pretty new to MIDI in general. I've been playing guitar for years, but only recently got a keyboard controller - the Akai Max25. I've been trying my best to research and get the hang of the lingo, but I can't seem to find anything that sorts it out well. All the sites that I look at...

Anyone ever write music in their sleep?

It's happened to me a few times. And reading this thread reminded me. I actually remember once, many years ago, I had a dream that I was playing a video game. It was some kind of Sonic the Hedgehog style game, and the stage music was fast-paced and energetic. I remembered it when I woke up and...

    Note or Sound Dropouts

Hello, I'm new to MIDI. Right now the only MIDI device I have is my Alesis SR-16 drum machine. It's the original one I bought back in 95! I have it hooked up to my PreSonus FireStudio Mobile and I track in Acid. I've been re-recording my old beats and saving them as MIDI files. When I piece them...

    What's your motivation for recording?

Yeah I've definitely been there... Still am there actually. In addition to making and recording music, the nerdier side of me likes to program (C is really the only language I know). I have some basic woodworking skills and I made my own shelf for my rackmount gear. And after completing it, it...

    What's your motivation for recording?

I suppose first and foremost I love creating music. But I love recording because I can preserve that creation. I used to get a kick out of hearing my playback from my tapes back in the day. Now I still love hearing my playback from my colorful DAW tracks as the cursor treks across the screen.

How Many Guitars do you own

I play leftie so my options are always more limited. I didn't think I had this many, but I have 4: 1) B.C. Rich Mockingbird - I've always loved this guitar. FINALLY got one in 2007. Still love it. 2) Fender Jaguar - Had the bridge single-coil replaced with Seymour Duncan Hotrails. 3) Fender...

Worst Piece(s) of Gear You've Purchased

Well okay, perhaps my experience is far from ideal :) I did buy mine used and there's no real telling of what it had gone through prior to my buying it.

    Muddy Guitar Sound

When it comes to direct recording and EQ, you'll want to think more of cutting rather than boosting. Instead of boosting the high end, try cutting the low end, especially the muddy 100 - 300 Hz range. HTH!

Worst Piece(s) of Gear You've Purchased

For me it would be the Alesis M-EQ 230. When I bought it it had already been discontinued, so I bought it off eBay. Shorty after I realized why it was discontinued. I can still recall the (physical) pain of trying to move those razor-thin sliders. And once you did get them out of their...

    For Zoom G2.1u Users

Hey everyone, so I’ve had a Zoom G2.1u for a number of years now, but only recently started re-discovering it. I like that it has a ton of functions in a modestly small housing, but I can never remember what any of the settings are. Plus, I find it a pain to go through the presets and twiddle...

    Acid 7 Click Track

:) True story: I actually did this when I wanted to learn a piece of video game music. I wanted to learn one of the stage musics for The Guardian Legend for the NES. I haven't had an actual NES console in years so I can only play it through Nester. Nester has no way of saving audio to a file, so...

    Acid 7 Click Track

This may be an inelegant solution, but, you could get an 1/8" stereo splitter adapter (TRS male to two TRS females). Plug the adapter into the line out of your computer. Have you PC speakers connected to one of the two female ends. Take an 1/8" TRS male-to-male cable, plug it into the other...
