yeah fair enough, you're right in that case. perhaps I have gone on a bit of a tangent in my attempts to provide some other analog options. Sorry Farview.

Do I really need a Little Analog (outboard) ?

oh yeah smart peeps at daptone for sure. Then there's artists on drag city, burger records, truth and soul etc who use what's considered even more 'low end' (considering the value hierarchies of capitalism when making art is counter productive id say, if you need a good brain surgeon they come...

Do I really need a Little Analog (outboard) ?

haha yeah this is true to an extent. The trident isn't a particularly coveted console though. If he didn't have the tube tech stuff and the plate his studio would be pretty basic. When he wrote that article he didn't have the gear and was doing the Daktaris etc... though those record are much...

Do I really need a Little Analog (outboard) ?

for a different take then the poster above. Check out gabe roths 'shitty is pretty' essay. You don't need to spend lots to have a great analog setup. Stay away from Mackie though. Any mixer (and gear in general) made before the 90s is more what you're after.

oooops.. what have I done to my 388?!

okay so I've worked it out. I think maybe it was the heater causing a power spike and blowing the fuses all along. I replaced all the fuses, even the ones that looked fine, and now everything working again. I hope someone in the future will find this thread in google and find it helpful. If a...

Tascam 388 Total Beater, looking for initial advice

I shouldn't be hard to get the power card seated properly, you kind of just move them around until you feel them slot in and then you gently press down. Not hard to do and you don't need to force anything that's for sure. Maybe if the pins are bent you might have to check them out. Failing that...

oooops.. what have I done to my 388?!

okay so i've got the tension arms adjusted to a place that seems alright. The left arm sits slightly higher than the right arm when playing back in the middle of the reel. Given that it seems to respond well going into ff and rw at both ends of the reel I think it's balanced better than ever. I...

oooops.. what have I done to my 388?!

Yeah okay I hear you. I'll managed to get these pics into my computer via drop box. I'm using Maxell 35-90 My mistake on thinking I couldn't do it visually. I see the tentelo meter is for measuring back tension. I've tried to get them to where they need to be according to the manual. I'm...

oooops.. what have I done to my 388?!

Hi sweetbeats! thanks for the response. Hopefully my issue is as easy as the last one you helped out with :). I do have some good news however. firstly, to answer your question, yes the original was a 3A slowblow. luckily, I have a put another fuse in and I have all the transport functions...

    Need new smaller mixer

Just wanted to chime in here. The 166a sounds pretty average. However the original 80s DBX 166 with the colored knobs do sound good. It has some similar opamps circuitry etc to the famous 160VU. Its not a 160VU obviously but they do sound good. The original 166 was popular with 90s hip hop guys...

oooops.. what have I done to my 388?!

So I was mixing the other night and I blew the F5 fuse while the machine was rewinding. I was working on a song at the very start of the reel. I've noticed it struggles to get up to speed recently when at the start of a reel and so I was helping it out by pulling down on the left control arm...

what frequency does the 388 hiss at?

So from understanding tape hiss varies across different tape sizes and formats . . . what are peoples go-to frequencies for adding highs on the way in to cut later to reduce hiss? Please don't say use dbx as I really don't like using Dbx all that much. I've been having good results at 10k...

    Traveling with Tascam 388

I transport my 388 in a van and am always wondering how I could do it better. I just put it on top of a small thin'ish ikea mattress and make sure nothing is going to move around and damage it. Would be interesting to hear from people who know what could potentially move around inside the 388...

Tascam 388 Reseating Channel Cards Query...

So if you open up the back you'll see the big strip that connects all the channel cards. Just disconnect the top card first and go down from there and slowly do the others. Just be gentle and you'll be fine. It's really not a hard thing to to do. Open it up and you'll see what I mean.

    No new decent cassette decks?

I have a tascam 122 mkii calibrated for Denon HD6 . . . the recording quality of it is actually quite remarkable. Very flat frequency response. The have direct drive so wow and flutter is super low. They still use this model in the national archives of my country. Probably because they are so...

Crackling TASCAM 388 AUX & EFF buss

well it would seem that doing this has fixed the issue. The issue was always intermittent so hopefully it doesn't come back. Ill leave it overnight and see if I can make the noise come back tomorrow . . . but other than that I think we might have solved this one! really appreciate your help...

Crackling TASCAM 388 AUX & EFF buss

I've taken the back off and the PBC has no signs of damage or anything at all out of the ordinary after looking over it. After putting the connections back on and reseating the PCB I turned the 388 on while it was still on its side and the noise seemed to have stopped. I started jiggling the...

Crackling TASCAM 388 AUX & EFF buss

so to be clear, I'm using headphones to monitor the noise through via the monitor/phones outputs here. If i have the STEREO latched to the MONITOR/PHONES section, I hear no noise when L/R is not latched on the channel strips. When I latch L/R on the channels I can hear the noise. Turning down...

Crackling TASCAM 388 AUX & EFF buss

Hey thanks for the help! I'll do my best answer your questions. 1. The crackling sound is present when plugging the monitor into both the AUX and EFF outputs (both RCA and 1/4"). 2a. The MON switch that is latched is the PGM/CUE (blue) switch. 2a. The noise is also present when plugging...
