switching balanced & unbalanced output on 388

I've always run the 388 master outs unbalanced as I can see in the schematics theres bunch of things going on to convert the master out to a balanced signal. I've always thought switching to balanced will degrade the audio path quality. However, I wouldn't mind strapping a comp or eq across the...

    500 series rack for 388

I've recently been using my 388 with some external preamps I've borrowed from friends. I really like the sound of the 388 pres but sometimes I need a bit more gain for certain microphones. I'm thinking about getting some 500 series pres as there's a bunch of options and a lot of it is very...

    biasing a 388 for 0db tape

a quick update! the machine is going well. I've made some wipers for the red oxide and they seem to work okay. I rarely use that tape though because im scared it's wearing out the heads faster than modern tape would. I need to look for a good polished modern 0+ tape that's the right thickness...

    biasing a 388 for 0db tape

Yeah I figured this was the case. I have a tascam 122mkII that came biased for Denon Hd8. I see there are 4 screws on the front, two for bias, and another two for levels. It then has another button which gives an osc at 10k and 400hz. As this is a three head deck maybe I should play around on...

    biasing a 388 for 0db tape

Yeah I hear what you're saying. I definitely need to get a test tape then if I want to move forward from here. As soon as I have the money i'll order one. I did the simpler rec/reprod test and it's pretty incredible the difference between tapes. The lpr35 comes back strongly at 10k and the 388...

    biasing a 388 for 0db tape

Hmm, I wasn't going to align anything though. I was under the impression workerbee's initial advise was to see if the machine is somewhat calibrated by comparing reprod at 1k relative to 10k and if so leave well enough alone. As I don't have a test tape yet I was just going to do that for the...

    biasing a 388 for 0db tape

haha thanks Yeah I would move along to the next steps in the manual but I don't have a test tape. I'm more just thinking of workerbee's advice of: Now that the meters are aligned, I was wondering what might be the best method to do this? Do it on each channel or just run one signal to every...

    biasing a 388 for 0db tape

I've calibrated the meters as per the '1-4-6 PGM BUS IN - PGM OUT' section of the manual. Curiously, every meter was at -1db on the VU when showing .3v on the meter and so I adjusted the internal VU adjustment trimmers until the meters read 0db as the manual directs. Firstly, I tested the...

    biasing a 388 for 0db tape

Great! Found it. How can I be sure that my interface is outputting exactly 0db? Last time I measured my multi-meter accuracy I seemed to have no problems and I just turned the output of my sound card up to full. I then adjusted the output db in the 'test plugin' which has the signal generator...

    biasing a 388 for 0db tape

well gee this is strange. the page is also blank on my iphone. I just tried another computer and blank there also! I wonder why it works for you? I've zoomed in and out and tried a few different things. bummer. I was really keen on getting into this today!

Considering buying an MPC1000 but need tips

I wouldn't worry too much. Get something and see if it works for you. There's obviously nothing wrong with a stock mpc 1000, they're legendary samplers. You can buy replacement pads but id just try it first to make sure it works. The mpc500 is great too. the roland sp404sx (and other sp models)...

    biasing a 388 for 0db tape

thanks for that however maybe something is wrong with my computer software because the page in that one is blank too? It jumps straight from 1-4-4 to 1-4-9 and there's a blank page in the middle. Do you have this problem? Maybe I need to try on another computer if this is the case. Yes I can...

    biasing a 388 for 0db tape

well my tests with the DMM seem to confim the ac spec listed - 0.8%(45-1kHz) or 1.2%(1kHz-10kHz) AC Voltage accuracy) so this is good news. I tested it with tones coming from protools through apogee d/a. At 400hz it read 0.2989 so im thinking I probably need to get an mrl tape now...

    biasing a 388 for 0db tape

haha too funny... well... at least I'm learning I suppose! As my DMM AC voltage specs starts from 220mV, am I okay to calibrate the meters with this? The manual says I need I need to apply a 1kHz signal at -60db into the MIC IN XLR and adjust the channels trim for a .3v reading from the the...

    biasing a 388 for 0db tape

That actually helped a lot. What can I say… wow… basic stuff… things are now making a lot more sense. Thanks for clearly explaining how this stuff relates specifically to the 388 for me. I did the basic tests and here is what I came up with. First thing to note. When doing the tests, I had...

    biasing a 388 for 0db tape

Firstly, just want to thank everyone who has taken the time to help me out here. Really appreciate it and to say that I have learned a lot would be a total understatement. I've realized I've created a lot of confusion here by simply forgetting that 35-90 is +3 (what I would have called +3db...

    biasing a 388 for 0db tape

ahh thank you sweetbeats. Everything is so much clearer to me now. I see now that +3b simply means that the tape (basically) distorts after +3b and how this have nothing to do with the fluxivity. I do have some reels of LPR35 but never liked them as they sounded sort of brittle in the top end...

    biasing a 388 for 0db tape

My 388 sounds great and it's always been reliable. However, I bought it straight out of a storage locker and I have no idea if the last person to use it was using a different tape with a higher bias. It came with a misc tape on a maxell reel and a box of bad 456 so no clues there. I'm also...

Do I really need a Little Analog (outboard) ?

yeah, don't bother. If that's your process then get good at mixing ITB. Just for the sake of offering another perspective that you might not have come across yet, consider this (this is the analog forum after all heh). So for example, when you're recording a snare drum it can benefit from some...
