Mixing Cliches (You know, that overdone crap)

Oh, I just thought of one..... Man, I'm glad this died for the most part with the 80's..... That awful fucking gated reverb..... Guy starts singing, massive reverb kicks in, guy stops singing, reverb trails for about half a second and then just STOPS........ ARRRRRRGHHHHHHHH!!!! I'm convinced...

Mixing Cliches (You know, that overdone crap)

Bear, what's this stepped-vocal effect? I've probably heard it, but I don't quite know what it is... If it's the same as "Robotic sounding voice due to massive autotuning", then I know, but if not.....

    Do people record vocals digitally??

there is no "tube" thing under 300 dollars that is worth getting..... a lot of the great "warm" preamps people love are actually solid state...... of course, those are thousands of dollars... for under 300, I would reccomend the M-Audio DMP3. Or a Meek MQ3, which has a nice photo-optical...

    Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

I just wanted to say that this is an exceptional album. Really nice sound to it, and a good logical progression of Wilco's sound. Anyone else here have it? What do you think?

    "transparency" of a mix

I will say that "doubling" works a lot better if you use different equipment each time you do a track of the same thing.

    Chino's vocals (from the Deftones)

chino's vocals always sounded to me like a hard rock version of michael jackson's..... with the breaths and everything.

    need a good cheap compressor

ditnoj- believe me, unless the tube preamp is over $800 or so, you DON'T want to be interested in it. all those "tube" preamps/compressors nowadays are taking advantage of the perpetuated idea that digital is "cold" and "bare", etc..... some of the best preamps ever made were solid-state...

    aggressive sound

hey, you've discovered one of the great (and often overlooked) fundamentals of recording! if the tracks sound bad in the mix, just accept you screwed up and re-record them. seriously, this makes it SO much easier (and way truer-sounding) than applying massive amounts of eq, compression, etc...

    Demo mixing advice

heylow.... thanks man, you are seriously TOO kind. :D and yeah, when I said "hanging", I meant putting it on a mic stand leaning over the drum kit, with the front capsule of the mic facing down just a bit to the drummer's right of the snare. oh, and me and the bassist (who was also the singer...

    Demo mixing advice

hey heylow (whoa)...... thanks for the comment. I guess I mentioned death cab before somewhere, but I'm not sure (I kind of forget which threads I post to here, and which ones I post at Harmony Central).... but yeah, I wouldn't say they're a big influence, but I've been listening to them a lot...

    Demo mixing advice

Sadly, I can't change the compression on the drums, as we tracked with it.... I know, I know, dumb mistake, but you learn quickly from those things...... Also, I don't think we paid any attention to the attack or release on the drums, which probably makes them sound even MORE squashed. :eek...

hey minusone, thanks for the kind words. that is actually kind of an older song of ours, it's been around for a while. it's funny that you mention bands it reminds you of, because I can never come up with a description of our sound... I mean, it's certainly nothing original, it's just tough for...

Hey, thanks a ton for the reply bruce! All your suggestions are duly noted, and it seems you went a little easy on me! :D I just wanted to see what people thought of a very rough mixing thing.... I haven't really eq'd anything yet, which is probably why the bass is so muddy. But next time...
