Here's my unsolicited review:

A = "clean" (same camp as Hardy, Great River MP-2MH, etc)
C = "API-ish" crunchy/forward mids, most 'character'
L = 'wider' than C, more lows, more highs, even clearer low mids.
Maybe you don't know your future...
Or maybe it's just an educated opinion. You have to remember it's my job (both of them) to A/B 95% percent of the gear that's on the pro market. When you have all this stuff at your disposal you start to develop very specific preferences, and the reasons to back them up.

Not true...
I'm not sure if there is a standard, but I would take the mics and put them in an X-Y pattern (capsules 90 degrees to each other), at least 2.5 feet above the highest cymbal. X-Y will get you good mono compatibility with little or no phase cancellation. If they are too close to the cymbals...
Just some food for thought, if you're considering the Apogee Rosetta 800 and use a computer to record, you may want to look into the Lynx two version "A". Two of the two "A's" will provide 8 channels of A/D/A (same as Apogee Rosetta), but the Lynx is 192khz ready (important to some people)...
The SM-81 is horrible for any price. Sorry if that offends, but that's what I hear. I used to own a pair many moons ago, got rid of them as quickly as possible. It sounds lo-fi and the mids are strange and unpleasant. I get people in to mix who record in their bedroom and sometimes they use...
I agree. Not enough people give this preamp the credit due IMO. It sounds great, and is very forgiving. When I say forgiving, I mean that when you lay a track down with it, it goes to tape sounding embellished in a positive way. Pieces like the Sytek and Grace 101 are indeed very nice, but...
The Neumann isn't horrible, but it's pretty vanilla sounding. Seems better at a distance too. The U195 is one of the best workhorse LDC mic I've ever heard. With the 'fat' switch, it's almost like two mics in one. It has quite a bit of color too, so it makes for some interesting (i.e. not...
It's no Great River or Chandler, but it sounds a lot better (and is quieter at higher gains) than a Mackie VLZ pro preamp.
