    Cardinal Points Pan Law

I totally hear you, Glen. To be honest, I haven't really read every post and I got scared by the stuff they were saying in the other thread in the link up top. I think I get the just of it. Really, other than a few times ever, straight LCR seems pretty boring and strange. And yeah, with the...

    Cardinal Points Pan Law

I know it was totally unintentional, but this is pretty much how all of the mid-career Beatle stuff turned out(LCR). I was listening to Revolver in the car and it was really weird. vocals and tambourine in the left, everything else in the right. You would think it would totally suck like that...

    '57 Twin > E609 > Tascam 414mkII Help..please...

Maybe try different mics? Seems like I've heard that some people are not fans of e609s... I've found it pretty tough to get mic'ed guitar tones I'm happy with. Always sounds better straight from the amp for some reason. And yeah, what Shawn said, if you have an extra channel, throw another mic...

    New song RIP IT!

Cool song, sounds great. Guitars and Vox are clean. As was said, maybe try to tame the vocals a bit, especially on the chorus. The drums sound a bit washy and distant...maybe too much reverb or panning or something? They do sound pretty cool in that decay right before the palm muting though...

2 main questions regarding the 002R and Universal Audio LA 610...

Yeah, on 1-4 the "line" inputs still run through the preamps. I just did a little test to double check...I've got a cheapo external mic pre and plugged it into input 5 (switched to +4), then thru "line" input 1 with the gain all the way down and got the same levels showing in protools. The...

2 main questions regarding the 002R and Universal Audio LA 610...

#1...I don't believe there's anything in protools that sounds related to your problem...Have you tried to pinpoint where the problem is (i.e. test a different mic, ...)? Sounds like either the mic isn't getting enough power or something's not getting boosted properly. If it's barely registering...

Why does my sound seem distant?

Yeah, hard to say without a clip. Mine seem somewhat distant as well. In my case i think it's less than awesome mics and maybe just "green" mixing ears. I recently remixed a song I did 9 months ago and the remix sounds a lot deeper and more present. What's your setup/equipment? Experience level?

    4 Mics on Drums--Recording Advice?

I second the Glyn Johns/recorderman approach on the overheads. Brings in a lot more toms and a much better overall balance and meatiness vs. straight l/r overheads. And yeah, 57 on snare, condensers on OH's and the last on the kick. Good luck man.

    Best 60$- MXL mic?

I have the 990/991 double pack kit thing. The 990 pretty much sucks butt, it's boxy and funky, but the 991 isn't half bad for the money. Works out to about the magic $60 you're looking to spend. It's a tad bit bright and not the most detailed on the planet, but I've successfully used it for...

    Over compressing/the loudness war

That's the one... :o I have no excuse. It seemed too bad to be true. I'm sure if I glanced at it for a few more minutes I would have picked up on it.... Excuse me while I get back on the turnip truck:rolleyes:...

    Over compressing/the loudness war

Wow, so I was flipping through a recording magazine today and found a full-page article about "loud mixes". It basically said that old stuff sucks because it wasn't properly mastered and that everything should be turned into bricks because it's the way of the future. It went so far as to say...

    Over compressing/the loudness war

Glen, I totally hear what you're saying. I've actually started telling bands about this whole deal and I'll admit I was being a little hyperbole with my last post. I really can't stand unoriginal music. My last project was a high school ska band that went out of their way to be as ska as...

    Over compressing/the loudness war

I'm sure if I did that test the unmurdered one would sound a lot better. The issue is, it will be quieter at the same volume setting. I'm not defending the pro-loudness side, just observing that the average high school garage band wants something that will be as loud as their favorite album by...

    Over compressing/the loudness war

An interesting observation i've made is out of the 6 or 7 demo CDs I've done for my friends' bands, they always prefer the solid brick version to the Sgt. Peppers dynamics version. I think my generation growing up with commercial stuff being so compressed has created a mindset that that's what a...

Ocean noises- Is my mic dead?

hmm...i asked my dad about it just now. he works in the semiconductor industry and his guess was something involving a transistor, so you might have hit it:cool: I'll do some digging with that. Thanks a bunch man.

Ocean noises- Is my mic dead?

The capsule doesn't look too dirty, and I don't think anything is wired bad... the fact that it sounds great for 3 or 4 minutes and then the storm hits makes me think it's probably a dead cap? It warms up then starts passing current to places it shouldn't, right? if so, any reccomendations on...

Ocean noises- Is my mic dead?

Yeah, it's definitely the mic. Thanks for the advice. I'll try that. I have a bad feeling it's not moisture though:(...

Ocean noises- Is my mic dead?

So I picked up a Rode NT1 (the older model) a month or so ago on eBay. All was well and good and I've recorded with it a few times since. I plugged it in the other day and noticed after about 3-4 minutes it starts making nasty noise, kind of like the "ocean" noises that come out of broken tube...

    Songs for the deaf

Well first off, the drums on that album are very processed (which is why I personally like their other albums better), so there's a lot of compression and eq. The toms are close mic'ed and are very predominant in the mix, creating the "in your face" sound. The guitars are genuine badass I must...
