What firewire hard drive should I get

30G laptop drive needs some assistance. Any suggestions for brands and retailers? Ebay "house brand" retailers like this? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2775762879&category=51080 I think 80-160 range should do me.

are RCA cable and SPDIF cable the same?

Good RCAs will work, even unshielded, especially on short runs, but not necessarily optimal sound quality. If you have to make do for a while you can use it, but you should get the 75ohm when you can.

    CD Printer

Does anyone know of any CD printers that will do a bulk load? Affordable disc at a time models are everywhere, and I know of a few expensive robotic burner/printer combos. But I'm wondering if there's a printer that could "sheet feed" cdrs and is well under $1k. Thanks

    Different M-audio Duo pop problem

(before I sell this thing . . .) I'm not have stuttering problems or noises during playback that have been discussed before. I'm getting a pop or click, sometimes a HUGE one, right when I start playback of something. This is in anything from Wavelab through just playing a commercial CD in...

    Mackie 828's hyped?

Yeah. Even where there's more or less general consensus about something on this board, other boards will have general consensus holding the opposite view. So don't buy them on the advice of the board, but if you lke them when you hear them, don't let the guys dissuade you either. Personally, I...

    Mackie 828's hyped?

I don't think the 824s are hyped on the high end at all. Just the opposite. When I've got something that sounds sorta bright on the 824s, it is a total ear bleeder on other systems. You can clear up the bass a bit by putting them on machined cones.

$200 Clean preamp evryon talks about

Would not an M-Audio Duo be a much better soution than getting a DMP to run into an Audigy card?

    Pre-delay

You didn't run it to a separate tape, you took the playback off the third monitor head and looped it back to the recording head. The tape speed determines the length of the delay.

    record player to computer

It could be for impedance, but I think its more likely for output level. How old is your receiver? If it's from the late 70s or later, they are probably for Moving Magnet vs Moving Coil cartridges. If it's from the late-60s or earlier, they are probably for Ceramic vs. Magnetic cartridges...

    Dynamics Processing

Re: He's got it! I very much would use one (and often do) on digital tracking as insurance to protect against digital overs, but not to deliberately change the character of the sound. Not necessary for recording to tape.

    Need advice on studio monitors

Well that's all self-evident. But do note Dragon's own article on selecting monitors posted here on homerec: it says let the pro reviewers narrow down the field for you.

Does Firewire 410 do stand alone?

Yeah, I read it before posting. Doesn't look good. I emailed m-audio. I report back when I hear from them.

    Pre-delay

So is that cross-channel stuff in the beginning of the Stones' "Angie" like the world's longest pre-delay, a separate track entirely, or print-through?

Newbies - Recording Industry The Truth.

And many people, at least if they're not students, have some of that stuff to begin with. If you've already got the computer and decent monitoring ability, $4k can buy you some pretty nice sound capabilities if you keep the number of simultaneuous tracks down.
