I've got one.
No, it doesn't have 24 tracks, I have no idea why they call it a 24.
What you have is 8 mono channels and 4 stereo channels, for a total of 16. The 8 mono channels have the in-line tape monitoring, which is great for use with an 8-track recorder. You don't have to re-patch to...
One other point that probably needs to be made though...
When you're dealing with a recording situation where you have a lot of inter-connected equipment, there's always a potential for unwanted sound coloration and signal loss. It's kind of nice to be able to remove the cabling from that...
I know what you mean, gaffa. Wading through all the marketing B.S and trying to figure out what is relevant and what just looks pretty on paper can be a chore.
I can tell you this from personal experience. I have a bunch of Monster cables in my rig and also several others, ProCo, Whirlwind...
You can usethe MPX100 for some guitar effects, but it doesn't have any distortion or overdrive effects. You could use it for reverb, delay, chorus, pitch shift, etc.
The green one is right, you should have both. What kind of price range are you talking? I just went through this myself around Christmas. I ended up with a Lexicon MPX-1, but I tried a whole bunch of 'em. My conclusion was that you pretty much get what you pay for.
If you tell us how much...
John Pearse phosphor bronze-love 'em.
They keep that "new string" sound a lot longer than anything else I've tried. The only problem is that when they go bad they go bad FAST.
Dobro,
Not much education required. I use our corporate internet connection, it's a DS3 line...very fast.
The bottleneck for my downloads is usually on "the other side". Most sites seem to get between 20 and 35K/sec. That's why I commented on sonusman's site, it's much faster than average. Of...
I'll second that James HE.
I don't have one but I've looked at 'em pretty close and they look like the shit. They're still fairly new, I'm hoping the price will drop a little.
Like Slack, there's not much I can say about the mix, it's way better than what I can do.
I just wanted to say that your server smokes, over 80K/second download speed...nice.
peacetrader,
First question: Why an ADAT?
Well, the MD-8 is certainly a good unit, but you mentioned using a studio. ADATs are an industry standard. You can take your ADAT tape to virtually any recording studio and they'll be able to work with it. Also, if you outgrow 8 tracks (and you probably...
I have an ME-30, but I only use it for guitar. It seems like it would be a little too noisy for vocals.
If vocals are what you mainly want it for, you'd probably be better off with something like a Lexicon MPX-100.
peacetrader,
I hope you realize that you're making our girlfriends look bad. :)
But seriously, for the money you have, I agree with Dom Franco. You can't go wrong with ADAT.
To answer your questions, it does 8 tracks at a time and uses Super VHS tape, which is just high quality VCR tape, but buy...
Dobro,
Good call! Yes, it was Mark twain.
(Notice that I live in Missouri, he's a bit of a local hero) :)

Okay, I can see this unit making the sound that it receives similar to a different mic. The problem is that it can't possibly do anything with the signal that it doesn't receive.
It isn't going to add the subtle characteristics of the performance, like the scrape of a pick on the string, that...
You answered your own question. That mic requires phantom power. If you want to run through your processing equipment before going to your 8-track, you'll need an external power source. There's more than one way to do that, but I'd suggest an ART Tube MP.
Oh man, don't let your kid watch Barney.
Don't you know that Barney is evil?
Do the math...
1) Start with:
CUTE PURPLE DINOSAUR
2) Change all U's to V's (which is proper Latin anyway)
CVTE PVRPLE DINOSAVR
3) Extract all Roman Numerals:
C V V L D I V
4) Convert into Arabic...
