Wow this is crazy cool stuff...being a cancer survivor and still dealing with some smaller stuff ..I am hopeful...Totally agree with her on how she references the barbaric ways current medicine deals with the Big C.... I'll never forget one surgeon telling me how he was going to deal with my skin cancer tumors so nonchalantly. Well I'll just cut here and here and will do a flap here...oh and that one on you ear we'll just cut off the top part of your ear.....WTF you're going to need to cut off part of my ear? Yeah don't worry you'll get used to it. People lose an arm and think it's the end of the world in a year or so they adapt...swear to God that's what he told me.... I ended up having it zapped with radiation and got to keep my ear...bastard..unfortunately others I had did require the knife and I am permanently jacked up in those areas...but the way they do this shit like they are God and their way is the best way...That particular Doc got all butt hurt that I chose radiation over his plan and when I did need scalpel surgery declined doing the surgery on me because I didn't "trust him"...what a turd.....ego's pffft! When they say doctors practice medicine they are not kidding...someday they will get it figured out...anyways...this is pretty interesting and encouraging.

don't get me started on doctors and hospitals because I don't know where to begin. It definitely pays to to get 2nd and 3rd opinions from doc's of different specialties. I've also learned that you need to be your own advocate because many doc's (IME) generally won't lead you in the right or different direction and will continue to string you along as they "practice." Doctors are rarely like tv ones. Some have no patient skills at all but are superbly skilled. However they see your notes for a few seconds and make decisions and sometimes don’t check. I got a request to make my annual checkup for my epilepsy. Trouble is, I don’t have epilepsy. My records say I had it 22yrs ago and have been on a register ever since! It makes me wonder if the trouble I had getting a mortgage on my house back then was the result. They’re now trying to remove the details. The same doctor told me I have prostrate cancer till he realised I’d had a kidney infection and the drugs for that produce a raised marker for cancer. So in the space of five minutes I’d been told I had it, then didn’t have it! Clever man but unaware of the response it evoked in me!

I just had my "free" wellness check. The guy pretty much asked me if I felt alright. Yes, so okay, I guess we're done here. Maybe he was going to order blood work, I don't know. But I had already told him my brother had prostate cancer, and as he was preparing to leave the room I asked if he was going to check my prostate. "Oh, you want that?". Well no, I don't want it, but it might be a good idea! Bottom line is I pay a shit load of money for insurance, I'm there for my annual wellness check(which I haven't had in several years), so I want everything that is included in a wellness check. Everything, including referral for a colonoscopy. Don't ask me if I feel alright and leave it at that. Preemptive, not wait until I am potentially eaten up with cancer and it might be too late.

POS doctor there... Yeah I just went in for my first physical in many many years. I mean when I went through the cancer thing at City of Hope they did the full monty including Cat scans and MRI's a dozen times over the last 4 years...now just once a year. I go in at the end of December for that fun ride in the tunnel... I did 45 rounds of Tomo radiation with a form fitted plastic mask that bolted my head in place for @ an hour each time...that was fun... Did about 30 2 hour stints in a hyperbaric chamber trying to get a radiation ulcer to heal..but hey I'm breathing, enjoying family and rockin and rolling so it's all dirty water under the bridge...free sailin now.

As my wife and I have learned ...the hard way...it's like buying stock DO YOUR OWN DUE DILLIGENCE! You have to be your own advocate and ask the hard questions Me with my crazy skin cancer shit and her with her hips that don't lie ...or walk all that well either...She's been through two hip surgeries in the last 30 years crazy stuff...now she needs to have the other one done...damn...we've literally been to at lest 6 orthopedic surgeons and they all tell a different story different perspective...some out and out purposely lie about the availability of certain procedures ..she's still undecided on which way to go... She had a resurfacing done on her other...15 years ago and still working but nooooooo they don't do resurfacing on women anymore only men...frickin medical system blows..

I don't mean to derail and get off on a rant, but since we're talking about the medical field...

Several years back my wife was feeling under the weather, other complaints but I can't remember. She starts shitting pretty much white poop. The specialist she was seeing told her to call and schedule some kind of test procedure, he suspected she had a liver duct blockage but could not do surgery until it was confirmed through the test. Wise, confirmation, I get it. She calls to schedule the test and they give her a date 3 months out. 3 months, shitting white. She calls him back and he says, wink wink, if you're not feeling better by this weekend go to the emergency room and they will order the test there and then. So we do as he suggested. They admit her to the hospital to sit in a hospital bed with the meter running for days. Hell, she/we could do that in the comfort of our own home. No, she has to be monitored, they say. When is the test, we can come back, we need the test. The next thing you know they show up in the room with a document we could sign of she wants to leave and go home....a denial of care legal document. Fuck that. We sat there for 3 days before a staff doctor showed up in the room. He ordered the test for the next day, day 4. Blockage confirmed, she was released and within 2 says was having surgery. For whatever reason, perhaps our protests of the entire bullshit, they ended up backing off charging for 2 of the days she spent occupying a room. Hell, I don't know, she could have died or suffered some kind of long term damage. Luckily surgery remedied the situation.

Oh, and as an on the other hand...

It's been 4 weeks since her knee replacement. Things went and are going really well. She's walking around on her own, with care. The guy obviously did a hell of a job.

Yep obviously we have a lot better technology and tools for diagnosis today than we did 100, 50 even 20 years ago. That said the services have degraded, get in line...wait 3 months for a test? WTF? Go to emergency wink wink. Fer fucks sake! I love this latest money grab technique most places are now using. Well before you can actually see the doctor for your actual problem, you need to come in for a preliminary meeting so we can get all the details of your case. Then we'll schedule your exam appointment.
$$$$$ It's all about the money. And Kaiser oh shit...kind of just the opposite they are going to try and keep you alive at the least amount of cost it's going to take to keep you that way...The one paying your bill is the one providing you your services. No Filet Mignon steak dinner for you, I'm buying so you're getting a P&J samich and you're going to be grateful for it! It will ready for you in a few weeks now go away ...

Wife and I pay heavily for a PPO insurance but the one daughter has Kaiser ...I despise them but I'll admit on some simple things they do a good job. But when you get into the weird stuff , you're rolling the dice.

About twenty years ago they were dead set on operating on my wrists for carpel tunnel which I said no to. I guess carpal tunnel syndrome
goes away if left alone.

I'm not discouraging anyone from seeing a doctor, but there have been many things I could have rushed to the doctor for a remedy over my many years, surely they would have done something. So many things I have for some reason forgotten. Of course I was younger then, prudent to be more cognizant and on guard now, I reckon.

That's interesting because I've been diagnosed with CTS two separate times and it went away both times. I have not had symptoms for quite a few years so I'm glad that I never pursued the surgery.
