In another thread, I mentioned my recording of a performance using a single mike.

The band (The New Holland Honey Eaters) specialises in presenting early American music as authentically as possible. In this case, they wanted to perform and record it as it would have been in about 1930.

This sample is taken from that performance, and I recorded it live using a single mike (a Lawson, but I don't recall which model, unfortunately . . . it wasn't mine, sadly).

The task is scarey, because balance and mixing decisions are done by the bad according to their varying positions around the single miking, moving in or out according to who is taking the lead.

Note that this was recorded flat, bypassing the desk and any room EQ.

Very interesting. That actually didn't sound half bad, I could hear everything (everyone?) I believe I was supposed to hear.

Forgive my noobitude, but what are the distinguishing characteristics of a Lawson mic?

Hi,

This Band from my home town play bluegrass and only use 1 mic for live performance, just like the old days. I have seen them live and they do get the sound right by having great mic technique.

One of the greatest bluegrass bands in the world and they are from Australia.

Shades of "The New Lost City Ramblers". Pretty good recording, but they need to work on their moves a lot more if they wanna do a one mic recording.

Great sound, great band. But that doesn't sound like a single mike on the myspace tracks. Oh . . . I see . . .they use a single mike for live performances.

My recollection tells me that I saw them at the Nationals one year.
