I've never copyrighted any of my songs yet, but i have the forms and will do so shortly. Should I wait and do full blown demos or would just a simple guitar/vocal recording do?
 
Guitar and vocal will do - as many as you can fit on a cd or tape actually - for $30. Title the whole work and away you go.
 
Yep. Pay the extra for the certificate of Registration too, it's a good reminder that you copyrighted it 15 years down the road when you see Puff Daddy doing it in his new video. I'd reccomend keeping a photocopy of your original application. I submitted 2 tapes in 1999 took way over a year, and I had to go online to their website to find out if they ever got registered. I found them, wrote down the registration numbers, and called up the copyright office to tell them I never got my certs of reg. Turned out because I changed addresses they couldn't find me, but I'm glad I saved my copy of application otherwise I may have forgotten I ever registered them!
