Help me out! :)

I would forget about style, right now, and focus on the very basics, like pitch control and projection.

When I started out a few years ago I would sing kids' songs to help me focus on the basics and forget style and emotional content. Kids' songs are really basic, like scales, but are more dynamic. Most of us have to work very hard before we have the basics under enough control to be able to start applying style. After three years, I have only recently started on tone and style. I am sure other people are quicker than that, but you get the drift.

Perhaps the most important thing to realize is the psychology of hearing your own singing. It is very deceptive. When we listen casually to music, our ears subconsciously correct small errors. But, when it comes to our own voice, our ears are able to do a lot more correction -- they are a lot more forgiving. So, you have to try extra hard to hear your own mistakes, because other people can hear them.
