Sound Proofing the poor man's way (Carpet Padding, Thick Blankets)

I had a friend who had this little shack out in back of his house, he called it his "Jam Room" It was lined with carpet, foam pads, and blankets. It worked pretty well considering, but high volumes from his guitar could still be heard late at night when every thing was quiet.

What are you using it for? vocals?

How noisy is the place where you are recording? If you are able to record vocals at a time when it is generally quiet, and if you line the closet well so that when standing inside you can't hear any ambient sounds from outside, it should suffice.

what the heck. It won't cost you anything to give it a try but materials on hand and a little time. At least then you'll know what you're up against.

I think most people use your approach for a room they want to rehearse in, but I've seen a ton of different ways to do these things.

Good luck and let us know what your results are.

Carpets are much more effective if you hang them and lift them off the wall, say 4". Preferably have two carpets one at 4" and another at 6".
