Services Inquiry : Building a Music/Studio Room

Hello all...just came across this board...love it. Look I'll be here a lot.

Well my band and I have had to vacate our previous rehearsal and live recording grounds. Usually bands take up renting a lock-out to practice, but prices for those can be high and are monthly annoyances.

We are looking at turning a garage into a rehearsal room. It's a rather large space..possibly fits three cars. It's conversion seem do-able but rather costly. So I have a few questions, because we have some money saved.

1) Are there any companies or people that specialize in building on converting rooms into sound proof spaces?

2) What's price range for something like this?

3) Are we better offr constucting ourselves.

Thanks so much. Any of your feedback would be great.

Yes.

The specialists are gonna be expensive, because they are used to finishing high-end commercial space. You might be able to find a specialty home-theater contractor that is more interested in residential work.

Maybe. Depends on your time and skill. Probably the best balance is to learn the methods of soundproof construction yourself, the hire a regular contractor to build what you have spec'ed. That will only be a little more expensive than standard construction due to the cost of added materials, but it won't take a pro much longer to install.

Be very careful if you go with with a contractor. Margins of error for soundproofing and acoustic work are far smaller than for general contracting. A 1/2" is no big deal in lots of framing work. In soundproofing, it could literally render all your efforts for naught.

You might want to do it yourself and really sweat the deets.
