Hey all,

I'm investing in some equipment to take my home production to the next level. I could use some advice on my selections and what else I will need. I'm looking for the most quality / most effective for the lowest price.

Here is what I'm planning on getting so far:

Mic:

Shure SM58SLC Vocal Microphone (with On Off Switch)

Headphones:

Audio Technica ATHM40FS Precision Studio Headphones

Midi Keyboard:

M-Audio AXIOM 25-Key Semi-Weighted Keyboard USB MIDI Controlle

Speakers:

Audioengine A2B Powered Multimedia Speaker System

You should tell us what you hope to achieve. What is it you want to do?

I'm trying to create and produce my own music (some blend of hip hop and / or singing), and I would like to learn how to produce like the professionals do, and possibly work with other artists. I'm basically looking for the entry level equipment necessary to teach me what I need to know and to get it done with quality while spending the lowest amount possible.

You might want a condensor mic for recording vocals. If you're just starting, some good mics are the AT2020, MXL 990, and Behringer B1.

You should get reference monitors instead of a multimedia speaker system. Monitors are designed to give a flat frequency response. So when you mix your songs, you know which frequencies to boost or cut. You probably want to get active monitors. That way you don't need an amplifier for them. Some good monitors are KRK Rokits, Behringer makes decent monitors, and Yamaha HS monitors.

You'll need an interface too. There are tons of choices. Tascam US series, Motu, M-Audio, and a bunch of other ones. They usually come bundled with software. Try some different DAW's out (Digital Audio Workstation) Ableton Live, Cakewalk Sonar, Steinburg Cubase, Cockos Reaper, Digidesign Pro Tools, Propeller Head Reason, Cool Edit Pro, Adobe Audition, and Acoustic Mixcraft to name a few...

Keep in mind, if you want a good sound, it takes some money.

Good Luck on the home recording!
