Emeric... they sound a bit... BOXY really :D :D

Anyway they are two Tannoy Reveals, that's where i started for my colour scheme ( dark red and black)...

Hello Ghost, nice setup. You saw the beginnings of my "temporary" control room. I'll post the designs for it soon. In the meantime, heres is the "beginning" of my little project studio/iso-room. Walk between "big john" and "tall paul" and you are at the door. Walk down the path next to it into "Jurasic park" Makes for great ambience for acoustic recording. Ha! And you thought you go through a lot to record in quiet surroundings.

Rick,

Looks mighty nice there in the woods!:D

It looks like you have one hell of a project in front of you.

I admire your drive to make it happen and am looking forward to seeing become a studio au natural!

Cheers! :)

Keep those pictures coming!:)

Just thought I would get in on the showing of our studio's.
I posted some photo's of my home studio under Markos BackAlley
Studio. Its about nine or ten posts down, it took me a year to build when ever I could get free time and now I dont have a garage and my jeep has been broken into twice while setting outside but thats the price

Yeah it does look peaceful. Man, I really miss being able to just walk out the back door and see trees. Or just go wandering sometime through some woods and enjoy the serenity. We're looking to buy another place if our current one ever sells and if I end up in another subdivision with no elbow room I think I'm gonna go postal. My wife wants to move into another situation like that so "the kids will have some friends to play with" and I'm like I don't care. I don't want to look out my back window into somebody else's trashed out yard! Or a privacy fence.

I'll stop now and let this thread resume it's normal programming. It really does look nice out there Fitz!

What'd you do? Buy Ted Kaczynski's place?!?

Hello Mike, hahahahahaha!! Looks like it from these pictures huh. Kind of like the backhills of Kentucky. But in reality, you haven't seen the rest of the property and house. I was kind of making fun of my own shit. Actually, I love this old stuff. And really, if you looked at it closely, they are very good structures. Just need a little concrete, steel and wood structural work and they will be fine. They just look like shit in their present condition. The little shed will be 3 times as big. It cantilevers out over a creek 75' below. I'll add on a couple of rooms and a nice deck out in the trees and the ambience will be killer. Heres a little elevation doodle for it. You gotta imagine what a iso room or two will look like on the inside. :D Of course, it will not be perfectly soundproof. But even John Sayer records with the window open.:p

Thanks Ghost. I will. Believe me. Cause this is going to be funner than hell. Already had fun just shoring them up for the winter. By spring, I'll have my plan and materials togeather and do it. But it will be an ongoing "add to" when I have spurts of energy. It'll be part studio-part craftwork-part art. Got a ton of beautiful driftwood logs to incorporate. Well heres the first elevation I am toying with. This is the east face. Remember, I am just doodleing.

Well, pics don't really show you the 3D ambience. But these will kind of illustrate the terrain for ya.

hiya --

The pix shows the room "before & after".

o like the before and after; gave a good idea of the room.
looked nice..... musicians workstation.

so, i'm a newbie at this acoustic stuff..

did you notice a big mix difference with your foam addition or was this for your neighbors/silence?

did you try any corner "bass trap" pieces?

i'm a bit confused, i was at GC today and their selling like two little corner pieces of foam for like $30? I just don't see what two "little" pieces of foam would do in the corner as bass traps.

My studio in progress

I am currently finishing work on HUGE sound generation and capture facilities, a one-room compromise space for tracking, mixing, rehearsing that also serves as a deluxe spousal doghouse.

http://www.toddejones.com/hugebuilding.html

It is made of stucco'ed cinderblocks, whose voids were filled with sand. The exterior dimensions are 16' X 23'. The walls are 10' tall, with a cathedral ceiling peaking at 14' (although the roofing truss pushes that down to a flat surface at about 13'.

Because it is a detached building, with its own HVAC, on three acres of wilderness, with nearest neighbor a rocker with his own studio, I am not pursuing much in the way of sound abatement.

Since it is a compromise space by design, I am trying to perform some broadband absorption without killing the room altogether. I am using a mixture of:

1) Ethan Wiener low bass traps with deliberately reflective surfaces to keep high end from being totally dead
2) 4" of OC703 across the front corners of the room, floor to ceiling
3) a polydiffusor running across the roof-truss-induced flat space on the ceiling
4) panels of wrapped 2" OC703 mounted on walls and ceiling with a 2" offset
5) a course of built-in book cabinets along the bottom level of the room to act as diffusors.
6) Thick heavy curtains (with moving blankets at the core) for the two big picture windows.

Whaddya think?

Todzilla,

Thats really coming together well. Have you had a chance to do any "critical" listening yet to see how it is all working>

Cheers,
Darryl.....

Darryl,

Not yet, although when it was just stucco'ed cinderblock and empty of any equipment, insulation and the like, it sounded absolutely putrid. As soon as I brought the big boxes of OC703 into the room (not even deployed) it began to sound much better.

I believe the ultimate test will be mixes that come out of the room. If they sound good, maybe I can help advise others on this board.

Cheers,

'zilla

Hey Rick!

W O W!!! That is one nice place man. I can see why you love it. What about those ship's horns. Figured out what to do about them yet? Other than just make them part of the sound of the studio.

Hello Mike. Yea. Time them. Ha! It would cost gazillions to sound proof against that shiphorn. I can't do that. In fact, I think you would have to build a bomb bunker or something. Its THAT loud. I know it comes in about once a week. The train is the same. Logging train. Logging ship. Hmmmm. I do believe there is a connection:D No matter, it will be a while before I'll have to tackle that. In the meantime, I'm setting up my stuff in my own second story room. "Temporary" I HOPE:rolleyes: You never can tell what life has in store though. Untill then, I'll just try and have some fun with it. My studio has always been just that. So for now, I'm just going to treat it, and make it work for me. Shit, this ain't no hollywood here. I know there are a few studios around, but I haven't got the resources to do the whole ball of wax.
Video seems to be a big thing here though. I'd love to do video, but thats a whole 'nother ball game. I'd love to have a mastering room here. But my ears and budget are over the hill. Soooo...I'm still setting up the shop. So then I can build what ever I need in the "studio". This will be a quickie. No soundproofing. Just treatment. Cause basiclly, there is very little noise most of the time. Actually almost dead quiet at night. Unless a neighbor fires off a round.:p
Thanks for the reply Mike. I'll post some CAD files of my proposed "temporary" room as soon as I upload them. Actually, its not a bad little room. 12' x 18' plus 2' more at the rear of the room where a wall to wall closet is. Perfect for a rearwall slat resonator. Ha! Heres a few pics of the view I have from the console poitition. Almost.
I just put down the platforms for the console legs to bolt to. I have to run cableing up through the platform brackets first though. My studio is a mostly analog as I run 2 16trk MSR's so there are tons of cables to run. I'll post pics as I proceed. And I'll
post my designs for a forum "free-for-all- rip it apart and laugh" session soon!:D This ought to be good. Ha! Well here they are.

I'm so jealous of you guys that live out in the middle of nowhere. Studio windows with like, forests outside <sigh>.

The window in my "studio" has blue foam in it so I don't disturb the neighbours.

agreed

I agree with the envy! nice studios and views...

i got a window, and if the dogs bark its probably my dumbass sister in-law driving up again to sponge or tell us who she's suing this week...and then want a free haircut or free babysitting.

maybe i'll put foam over my windows? hmmm

hi track rat. i just saw the pictures of your studio and as you and happen to be drummers i thought you could really help me.

firstly when you play the drums does the sound travel out of your room, i.e. is your room completely soundproof ?

what material do you use on your walls and floor to achieve complete sound proofing ?does foam stuck on the wall help in sound proofing.

Well, I'm not a drummer (but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night :D ). My sound room is pretty tight though. I built a room within a room. The inside framing is isolated from the existing structure so as not to telegraph sound inside to the outside. Plus double layers of drywall and caulking all the joints (and smoking a few) help. I can do drums here in the middle of the night without bothering the neighbors.

I'm getting there

I finished soundproofing, minus the door. I'm going to vinyl tile the floor tomorrow, and check out some doors. I'll be hanging 703 wraped in cloth next week for an absorber.
QUESTION
What is the best way to hang this stuff? I'd like to use it in 2'x2' with maybe some 4'x2' sections here and there.
The monitoring room still needs acoustic treatment as well. I don't have a window, so I'm planning on using a video monitor.
