handheld db meter

Hello , I just picked up an analog handheld db meter for checking my room and monitors. The problem I have is ... while playing pink noise thru my system , I was sweeping the area behind my desk near the room corner , and my meter pegged out . I assumed I had a bad spot and needed major bass trapping. When my pink noise sample ended my meter stayed pegged with No audio playing. Turns out that my meter was responding to EMF from a power source and strip behind some wall padding. Every hot wire, desk lamp , rack mount etc.. pegs it if I get close .. I've read a lot of articles about using these and Nobody warned about power sources . Do I have a defective unit ?? Will a digital meter be the same ??. Does your's do this ?? Thanks ... MS
