Here you will find NRC ratings for just about any insulation or absorbtion product on the market... shows ratings for each thickness... thought this might help a few people out... :)

Got my Johns Manville 817 from McCormick Insulation Supply, Inc.

They've got a bunch of locations scattered across Maryland and Virginia. They were helpful, cheerful, and highly professional -- and that did not change when I told them I only wanted two packages of material.

I got some helpful information in a thread I started looking for some OC 703 or equivalent product in Canada.

Ottawa Fibre products, specifically the OFI-48 and OFI-64 (http://www.ofigroup.com/) are supposed to be extremely similar to the OC 700 series.

These OFI products are available through ISOFAB at several locations:

Just thought it might be of interest to someone, somewhere...

A good friend of mine works for Patene's which is a building suppy company here in Ontario. They dont rep Owens Corning, but they carry what he thinks is a similar product Roxul RXL40. A semi-rigid insulation which comes in 24x48" pieces of thickness 2, 3 or 4". Apparently their min. order would be one bag which contains 64, 48, or 32 sq.ft respectively. This is what I plan to buy when Im ready.

I'm glad we've got the new guy here to straighten us all out on that issue!

Seriously, I'm no expert, but the data clearly shows that rigid fiberglass and rockwool do a pretty darn good job absorbing down to the 125 to 150hz range. I'm not sure what you consider the "low mid and bass range," but rigid fiberglass clearly does more than "reduce the reflection of upper midrange and high frequencies." Sounds like you are describing the performance of foam.

On Ethan's site, he explains: "705-FRK that is four inches thick and spaced 16 inches away from the wall can be quite effective to frequencies below 125 Hz." He also has data showing that higher density provides better absorption at the lower frequencies.

Check out Table 1 on Ethan's site (it lists absoprtion coefficients):

http://www.ethanwiner.com/acoustics.html

Check out Page 2 on this website for rock wool absorption coefficients:

http://www.fibrexinsulations.com/pdf/SoundAttenuationFire.pdf

I do believe that sealed bass traps like those described (and manufactured) by Ethan provide absorption below 150hz, but stating that rigid fiberglass panels only absorb the upper-mid and high frequencies is just plain wrong.

(once more for thoes links, so they don't get lost as a part of the overall quote.)

soundproof drywall ...Yes it does exist!
www.quietrockonline.com
This is the best overall solution!
the stuff is soundproof with just one sheet Comparable to over eight sheets of drywall.
this stuff has some special threads or something that convert sound to heat then there is a metal sheet laminated between the qypsum to stop the heat.
THX certified
check out the specs @ www.quietrockonline.com and don't forget to mention supertech I'm gonna need more!!!
thanks for the info on the doors too.

This website ATS Acoustics sells rigid fiberglass board online (not Owens Corning brand, but equivalent). They ship to the US via FedEx which makes it easy.

I am affiliated with the site. I hope this post is helpful to those of you looking for an easier way to get the materials you need.

hes right... the max wall wont do anything for soundproofing... no foam will... to soundproof you need to use extremely dense materials... there is a product from auralex called Sheetblok which is used for soundproofing, but it is quite expensive... in the specs it claims to be "about 6dB more effective than a sheet of solid lead at stopping the transmission of sound." Anyway, hope I could help a little...

spi specialty products and insulations will sell you 703. you have to buy in packs of 12 sheets, which run for about 60 dollars. I just picked some of this up at the columbus, ohio store, so prices are from there

Here's a clickable link...

P.S. Here's a map of their locations...

Cheers..

SPI didn't make me buy in 12 packs. They were fully willing to break open packs and sell by single panels. I happened to have bought 20 anyway though.

Any price and thickness info would be awesome... Thanks

i think 703 was about 1.15 a square foot?
many equivalent products are much cheaper.

1260 2" (51mm) A 6.0 pcf (96 kg/m3)
0.25 0.85 1.15 1.10 1.04 1.06 1.05

that's what i got, for about .60 cents a square foot

by comparison
703, plain 2" (51mm) on wall 3.0 pcf (48 kg/m3)
0.17 0.86 1.14 1.07 1.02 0.98 1.00

unfaced 703 is about twice as expensive.

this is a marvelous thread... im having trouble finding the pricings for a lot of this insulation though.

which is better from Roxul, AFB or Safe?? you keep saying "safe n' sound"..but im not seeing that

Hey everybody,

My first post here. Lot's of good info concerning where to buy rigid fiberglass and rockwool.

I'm out in California, a couple hours away from S.F. so I checked the SPI there and they're prices seem pretty high. The 8 pcf 2" 2'X4' panels of Roxul are $.70 a square foot.

I mentioned that I'd heard about someone in Oklahoma (Scottgman) getting it for $.39 a square foot, and the guy said that's lower than they get it at cost.

Anyway, does anybody know of a good place to get Mineral Wool close to the Bay Area? I'd even be willing to pay more that .39 a sq. foot, but I think I can do better than .70. I need a lot of it.
