How do you decide what kind of music to write?

I decide what kind of music to write depending on the current mood. I listen to myself and then try to convey emotions into music.

I second the opinion expressed by RFR above. Replicating something you like is a huge way to learn, I've done a few over the years, I even extracted Frank's voice on The Summer Wind using filters and then I put his voice into my own arrangement. Goodbye by the Pretenders gave me the most trouble because that drum groove is in yer face - but it's not, it's the whole song but again it's not. I write black comedy rock musicals so my characters sing about what's important to them, that gives me the subject matter and maybe the genre.
