When I was trying to get vocal sound to be more like a singer I respect who also has a (Canadian) nasal sound, I took an acapaella song of his and ran it through Reaper to look at the frequency spectrum, and noticed a band near 600Hz (I may mis-remember) that I had been keeping smoothed out. When I added a little EQ bump in that range on my vocals, I liked the results. The point being - experiment with EQ - don't do something because 'it's the way I was told to do it'.
