i am getting some clipping and distortion on my vocal tracks i was wondering if someone could help

i am running a condenser through XLR to my interface and recording at an appropriate volumes

so whats the best way to stop disortion a compressor? a compressor/limiter?
and whats easy on the wallet but a bang for your buck

p.s. i know this is a newbie ?`s but i just want to do it right from the get go

so thank you in advance:):)

Compressors / limiters reduce gain *after* the source. If you're having gain-staging issues somewhere in a simple chain (mic/preamp/interface) then adding dynamics after that isn't going to help anything - Except for the signal to the converters. And as mentioned above, if you're distorting your converters, you're already far too hot.

If by "appropriate" levels you mean something peaking around maybe -12dBFS, I'd say you have an issue somewhere. If you mean "really loud but short of clipping" then we know what the issue is already.
