Twitchiness of AI input gain control question

It's probably my direct recording technique but since I've gotten Logic Pro and can now see the levels with numeric readout, I've noticed something. When trying to dial in the input level, the AI input control works pretty smoothly up to around -22 dB on the mixer's readout. I'm trying to aim for -18 to -12. Those last few dBs from -22 are a bear to dial in. I can hardly touch the control knob and it leaps to -11 and higher and I'm hardly batting my eyelashes.

Am I doing this wrong? It seems as if the sensitivity at the desired threshold is rather twitchy. Should I go for the lower side of -18 and use the mixer fader to bring it up later?

That's typical of budget preamps that don't have a pad so that the gain control has to accommodate a very wide gain range. It is only really a problem when you want to set more than one channel to the same gain setting.
