Tascam DP008 Phantom Power

I just got a Tascam DP-008 recorder, which is equipped with phantom power. However, I'm find that generally I need to have the levels at about the 4 o'clock position (with input set to "high") to get recording levels in the target zone more often than not (especially playing acoustic guitar with my fingers.) The microphone I'm using is an AKG Perception 120, and I'm wondering if:

a.) the above indicates the microphone needs more juice
b.) if so, would this be the job for a microphone pre-amp?

Thanks in advance for observations/suggestions.
