Recording technique and vocal Q

When you guys are recording do you like to add yer compressor and or effets, pre amp. ect. before or after you start recording. Cause some will add the effects so that during the mix the producer is hearing how its panning out during the mix? also what do you think is the most important part in getting yer vocals to sit in the mix correctly?

After, almost always. The second part of your question; vocal technique, followed by compression,EQ,reverb/delay, in that order, as little of each as necessary.

Well, preamp is integral to tracking a strong signal into the DAW, wouldn't really think of re-preamping after the fact.

Sometimes I put a touch of gentle compression on, while tracking, to tame unruly levels, but mostly, like Robert, effects are post-tracking. Back in the old days of home recording, when you had just one 'verb, you'd have to apply it during tracking, 'cause you couldn't share different settings otherwise.

For me, the most important part of getting a singer's vocals to sit right in the mix, is to have a nice mic that matches his/her tone.
