ciao to you all!
I'm going to record my band next week (halloween night)
what I have is:
-6 piece band (drums, bass, 2guitars, keyboards and 1vocal plus
3backing)
-1 soundcraft spirit live 16.4.2
-1 ADAT LX20

This is what I'd do:
I'll set the mixer channels this way
then take their directs out (or buss out) and plug them into ADAT

ch.---------mic----------buss--------ADAT
1-----------vc--------------------------1
2-----------bk vc--------buss1--------
3-----------bk vc--------buss1---------2
4-----------bk vc--------buss1--------/
5-----------bass------------------------3
6-----------gtr--------------------------4
7-----------gtr--------------------------5
8-----------kboard----------------------6
9-----------drums---------buss2------
10----------drums---------buss2--------7
11----------kick-----------buss2------/
12----------ambience------------------8
13/14-------vamp
15/16-------minidisk

Then we'll mix it all down on our pc,
but this will be food for next posts... :-)

Should this work?

now it should be clearer.
our drummer has a little mixer with a stereo output (tr 9-10) where we mix toms, snare and overheads.

It looks ok. I'm not sure what a "vamp" is?

Is the ambience a room mic or printed effects from a box? If it's an effects processer, yuou might want to just add it in later, which frees up a track for either making something else stereo (like the BU vox or the drums) or letting the kick have it's own dedicated track.

Of course, you could always just borrow or rent (for like $25) another ADAT for the night and have the luxury of 16 tracks to play with.

well, with "vamp" I mean a pre-recorded introduction to the show.
That night it could be something like O Fortuna (Carmina Burana) or another scary tune...

very good "graphical presentation"...and i think it can work the way you imagined it...you can't really do it in many more different ways, can you?!!
good luck...post a tune or two when you're finished

here are my other thoughts:

tell me if I'm wrong:
I woke up this morning thinking that the major feed for this live recording should come from the ambience microphone. I'll only use the other direct inputs to adjust the final volume of the instruments. I came to this conclusion by reading other posts where it's said that the loudest things on stage are the least loud on board.

Keeping in mind that I've got 8 rec-inputs
2 for guitars
1 for bass
1 for keyboards
1 for lead vocals
1 for buss for backing vocals
1 for ambience

what should I mic with the lasting one?

Snare, kick or what else?
