Noisy piano pedal

Hello there fellow recording kinda peoples. My first post here. I did a remote yesterday that involved recording a woman playing a Yamaha grand piano. Beautiful sound. No matter where I positioned my mics, I could not eliminate the sustain & damper pedal noises. Any suggestions?

A shot in the dark . . .

Am I correct in assuming that a noise gate wouldn't work because the gate would already be open and thus would let the damper noise through??

I think so. Anyway . . . if the damper noise is not very prevalent, I wouldn't worry about it. I've heard plenty of professional stuff (and this includes Elton John and Ben Folds Five) with damper noise in it. It's obviously something that is just unavoidable when micing a piano really closely. IMHO it isn't really that bothersome. Just reminds me of the majesty of the instrument I'm hearing.

Try micing from a greater distance as well. I know this will change the sound, but if you experiment, I'm sure that you will be able to come up with a "happy medium."
