Anyone have a LA610 or 6176

The 610 preamp is a great sounding preamp but it has it's limitations. Remember it came from the 50's out of Bill Putnam Sr's console designs at United Western. I had an LA610 for a while and it sounded great on things like vocals and instruments with softer transient envelopes. Truth be told, the 610 is not the fastest preamp when it comes to transient response. It is also not known for it's headroom, which means it's not so good for things like drums, where you want to preserve transient content. It sounds warm and full though, and combined with the LA2A (and the 1176 in the case of the 6176), it's butter on certain things. That being said, because it has a slow transient response, it might be useful for taming things that may be sounding a little "pointy" to your ears, possibly on things like horns.

Regardless of the above, it's a classic and quality piece of gear that you will only benefit from.

I get to use a Solo 610. Tried it on bass first, but found a Countryman Type 85 to have the sound we wanted. Tried it on pedal steel next and it was great. Steel player had just switched from a vintage ShoBud with a mild sound to a new GFI with a bit of an edge to it and the 610 really smoothed it out nicely.
