Want to record directly to mp3

I listen to a lot of talk radio. I'd like to record it diirectly from the radio (not the net) while I'm at work. Can someone point me to software that meets the following criteria...in order of preference:

1. Freeware (not necessary, but would be nice)
2. Runs on win98se (if absolutely necessary..win2k)
3. Record through mic jack on sound card...or/and line-in jack
4. Record directly to mp3....not wav first then translate to mp3

I've tried MESSER. It doesn't work. No sound no matter how I hook it up.

thanks.

Not sure I understand...

Recording from a radio requires that the radio have some kind of outputs (preferably line-outs or digital outs). Then it's just a matter of finding the right cables to hook into the computer, via Line-In jack, or Mic jack if you really have to.

Any software from there can record as MP3. But most software will not record directly to MP3 format. MP3 is a compressed version of WAV/RAW audio data. If it's recording to MP3 format, chances are, it's converting it on the fly. (Not in all cases though).

A simple Google search will turn up all kinds of freeware MP3 recorders.
