Splitting large audio file into tracks

I sometimes download audio files from the web such as interviews or a tutorials that are 1hr to 1.5hr MP3 files. Without having this file split into tracks I cannot go back to where I left off listening to it. For example, if I listened to the first 1/2hr on the way to work, I'd like to be able to jump ahead to that section the next time I listen to the CD.

How can I take a hour-long audio file and split it into 5minute tracks?

I'm new to burning CDs. As a matter of fact I've only burned one so far.

Thanks in advance for anyone that can help.

On a lower budget, Cakewalk Pyro will let you drop track markers in the big file. This avoids the tedium of saving all the individual parts, keeping them in order, and burning the batch of them.

You can also do some simple editing like cutting out sections and crossfading transitions from one section to another...

Of course the 1.5 hr ones will be too long to fit on a standard audio CD. Will your car player do MP3 CDs?

Track markers

I ran into the same issue a few years back. I record concerts onto DAT (with permission, of course) and I found a program called CD R Win ( http://www.goldenhawk.com ) that uses what they call cue sheets. Basically, I put a 70 min (+) .wav file on my computer and then tell CD R Win where I want the track indexes. To get the time information, I use Cool Edit Pro. CE also lets you do things like fade in/out, normalize, etc. I' ve burned hundreds of concert DATs and there are no breaks between songs. And it's an inexpensive yet very reliable way to do what you're looking for.

But then, CE Pro cost a few hundred dollars. You could do the same thing with Cool Edit 2000, which is only $70, or Sound Forge XP, which is also inexpensive. There are others.
