Could I get away with using Wav/4 and Cakewalk together without using a mixer between my instrument and the sound card? Are there any cards that are just as good as the wav/4, but less expensive?

Any signal going into a WAVE must be preamplified. Mics have no powersupply so you have to run them into something. I used my guitar amp to preamp one signal at a time untill I got a mixer. I dont know if other sound cards are like this. I would run my drum machine through my guitar amp via the parrallel output and into the WAVE, then do the same with guitar, bass and vocals. It isnt the best way to go but it sounded o.k.
