I am moving up from 4 track recording to a fairly serious home digital studio based around Cubase VST/32 and am looking for a good book as a starting point for all the recording stuff that is going to be new to me. I have never had to deal with miking a drum set, only vocals and guitars and I know that experience will be the key, but I am looking for any help I can get on EQ'ing and mic placement for drums and other instruments.

Any good suggestions?

I use the Musician's Guide to Home Recording by Peter McIan and Larry Wichman. It's pretty old but useful for basics. I got it at a used bookstore for 1 dollar.

Lol, unbelivably that is the only recording book I own. I dug it out of the box of books in my closet to brush up on mic patterns a week ago. I saw it was copyright 1986 and figured recording tech has changed so much that it might not be very applicable to todays environment, so it's nice to know it has good info on it.

I have saved the URL's...I really appreciate everyone's advice.

If there are other good ones please continue to post....

Here's a couple

Microphone Techniques:

Home recording:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/A...0812736/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-7724299-3054300

(This is actually a 3 volume set, with each volume being around $50 US.)

The books mentioned above come with CD's to give you an idea of what you should listen for and what not to. They also help the beginner to be able to relate to the vocabulary that is used when recording so that you can express the sound you're trying to get. Enjoy.

You guys are probably going to laugh, but I picked up Home Recording for Musicians for Dummies and it's really quite a good bood. Nice broad coverage and it gives lots of useful tips.
